1) If you hook up your DSL right, there will be no interference on your phone lines. 2) You could be next door to the server in dallas with dialup and have a worse ping than someone in Denmark with broadband. Ping has more to do with your connection than anything. It does have to do with the server, but usually the defining variable is your connection. 3) Your download speed is entirely dependent on who you're downloading from. Cable generally has higher download rates, but they're definitely not as consistent as dsl/dialup.
Oh, thanx Gman, but check this out, my DSL mustn't have been hooked up right, b/c (on some occasions), my connection would PLUMMET when I got a phone call! Based on that fact alone, i would rate my cable connection higher in the consistency department. Also, i've never had a download or a connection drop with my cable modem, both happened when I had DSL, but I'm just speaking from personal experience, i don't know what the vast majority of customers go through.
P.S., what does the acronym DSL stand for? I thought it was digital satellite link.

Maybe you have Fiberoptic. That's a big possibility if it interferes with your phone line.

I Hate that, Cable keeps fluctuating so much it gets annoying sometimes. The thing I encounter the most is when I am downloading files from a file sharing program, I will be downloading around 100kbs, but near the end it slows down to somewhere around 2-5kbs. Really frustrating

Keywords "USED TO," as in back in the day, a long time ago, now I don't. Read the first post if you don't understand. I plugged a phone cord into my ethernet port. I didn't realize that it wasn't compatible because I USED TO use cat5 cables where the lock on the end was broken and it wouldn't click into place. The phone cord fit into the port, but didn't click into place because it was too small. I didn't notice because the cords I USED would never click into place anyways.

The highest dl rate I've gotten on a file sharing program is around 50-80 kbps, I dunno why its not higher, I guess it's just the type of cable. Not to mention I have like a 250 ft cable from my comp to the router.

Wow, that's probably degrading your signal. Have you thought about investing in a wireless router?

Wireless poons, I have wireless-G and after disabling a few services it runs flawlessly, never have a network failure, although I pickup my neighbors signal and can access their network when i choose to accept it. Good thing they cant accept mine. But anyways good luck on your network issue.

lol. We didn't get one cuz people said they weren't reliable. I figured there was some noise or something that lowered it.

My friend has a wireless one and it works perfectly anywhere in his house. You could hide it in his closet and it would work fine. Not that I have, or anything

Do you even know what CAT-5 is?? I run my full network off of CAT-5 even to my phone jack. So uhh yea....
But as for the wireless router I didn't buy one either because of the signal problems I read about. My computer is about 4 feet from the router, while my dads on the otherhand is on about a 150 foot cable to the other end of the house. He can download at the same speed as me so I doubt it is the length of your cable or type. More than likely that is just a limit on your connection from your ISP. Unless you are only talking about your downloads are only that slow on a file sharing program, then your downloads are so slow because no one is uploading fast enough to you. On Azerus depending on what I download I could be anywhere from 10 kbs all the way to 200 kbs, it all depends on who is sending to you. Where as if I download from a website to say, I will download at what my ISP limits me to, which is about 370 kbs or so.

I use kazaa lite and limewire, limewire is cool, but kazaa its basically the same as when I had dial up, about 5 kbps. Really slow. Strange wrote: Hastings, you're such a n00b.
A perfect reason why I should be accepted into this wonderful community.

Yeah, too bad you can't download a thing! I've had dial-up, DSL, and Cable Modem access. By far, the cable modem access was the best. It's transmitted through coaxial cable, so it doesn't interfere with my phone AT ALL! Also, I have never recieved a more reliable or faster connection. I constantly download at a minimal speed of 335KB/s. The fastest I've reached so far is 3MB/s.
Also, you're ping has more to do with how far the server is than your connection speed. for example, My ping on n00b servers is a consistent 35 from Philly. When I play on n00b.eu servers, i get a ping of 102.
"For those not in the know, Ping is a measure of latency, it's measured in milliseconds. Latency is how long it takes for a message to get from your computer, to it's destination and back again.
LOL punkd' i've got cable... i dont think that that stuff will accually hold a stable connection... if i were to guess.. though i may be wrong, i think it would jump around an awfull lot.
