Post Wtf is 56K?
So I was trying to hook up the internet at my friends house to my comp I brought over and I plugged the phone cord into the ethernet port. Turns out I didn't have a modem at all. gj to me. I dunno why I thought this was worth mentioning, I guess I just want the attention.

BTW, you guys have burnt the letters GG into my brain, and I can't stop saying them now. Thanks.

Does your friend have cable or dialup (aka 56gay) if he has cable then you can either get a router/hub/switch and share the connection that way through an NIC card/Eithernet port, or get a Crossover cable and connect directly to his computer and share it that way....your post made no sense to me btw...

Dial up SUCKS!!! Especially if you had Cable before and had to down-grade at some point, you feel you want to kill yourself waiting for a stupid page to load. I'm with M.A.D. (Men Against Dial-up)

LOL, so what you're saying is that you plugged a phone cable into your ethernet spot, HAHAH that takes alot of common sense. They're not even the same size.

How the heck did you fit a phone cord into an ethernet port? That's probably why everyone doesn't understand your post. Didn't you realize it was a little loose?

It was actually almost a perfect fit. The only thing I thought was odd was that it didn't click itself in, but I used to plug in alot of cat-5 cables with the little plastic locker thing broken so I ignored it.

A phone jack will fit into a WAN port, but a CAT-5 will not plug into a phone jack.

I had DSL for a month or two. I had to get a new modem 2 times because of lightning storms. I had the Modem on a surge potector but the lightning came through the phone line and zapped it. There were burn marks in the wall phone jack. After the second time it happened I said F*CK it and got rid of it.

Yeah, too bad you can't download a thing! I've had dial-up, DSL, and Cable Modem access. By far, the cable modem access was the best. It's transmitted through coaxial cable, so it doesn't interfere with my phone AT ALL! Also, I have never recieved a more reliable or faster connection. I constantly download at a minimal speed of 335KB/s. The fastest I've reached so far is 3MB/s.

Also, you're ping has more to do with how far the server is than your connection speed. for example, My ping on n00b servers is a consistent 35 from Philly. When I play on n00b.eu servers, i get a ping of 102.

"For those not in the know, Ping is a measure of latency, it's measured in milliseconds. Latency is how long it takes for a message to get from your computer, to it's destination and back again.

Uh, that's not entirely accurate.

1) If you hook up your DSL right, there will be no interference on your phone lines.
2) You could be next door to the server in dallas with dialup and have a worse ping than someone in Denmark with broadband. Ping has more to do with your connection than anything. It does have to do with the server, but usually the defining variable is your connection.
3) Your download speed is entirely dependent on who you're downloading from. Cable generally has higher download rates, but they're definitely not as consistent as dsl/dialup.
