Also removing the USB device from your boot sequence in CMOS may work.
Ah yes! Hidden deep within the bowels of the CMOS was the "enable boot from USB" switch. All is well now.
For all you tech junkies:
I'm using a 3ware Escalade 7000 RAID controller. It's got two 80G Western Digital drives connected to it in a RAID-0 striped configuration with a 64K stripe size. I haven't done any benchmarking yet and I probably won't. I didn't benchmark it before I changed it so there's no way to gauge the improvement except for my own perception.
The USB drive is a Maxtor 3100. It's a 100G drive with USB 1.1 & 2.0 capability, 7200 RPM, and it's much much faster than I had hoped it would be. I'm dragging and dropping files to and from it like crazy, and it's truly amazing. Anything less than 100M doesn't even show the little window with the paper going from file-to-file. It's just instantly moved or copied.
