256bit and as many pixel pipelines as you can get, ie 20 or 16 is good.

Sorry guys but having a ton of memory on a poor gpu wont help anything. There are still 64mb cards out there that will outperform a lot of these budget 256mb cards.
What a lot of people dont understand is that on slow cards having more memory will actually make the card perform worse.Reasoning being that it takes more time too access the extra memory. On todays newer cards that use ultra fast memory and pci-e thats not a problem.
The best way for us to help you not waste money would be to list your specs and the amount you wish to spend.Orex is right 256bit and as many pipes as you can afford is always good advice.
Really the best upgrade for you would be replace the motherboard with something that has atleast a agp slot.Pci cards are just not able to hold decent frames in todays games.

well im sure he has 512MB of ram or more. I have a 1GB but I only use 512 of it. If you want, I'll sell u this card. Barely used, but it does get hot, I just put a new heatsink and fan on it.
Nvidia Gefore 5500 ULTRA 256MB 8x AGP svideo/DVI $60, stays about 48 Celcius
nvidia Geforce 6200 ULTRA 256MB 8x AGP svideo/DVI $120 stays at room temp, if not 2 degrees above.

I too am poor. However I just bought a geforce 5500 256m pci and I am happy w/ it. Of course i was use'n the craptastic onboard intel vid card giv'n me a whopping 20fps on cs and forget about hl2 or source. Now i can play hl2 and source without problems.

Mine was about $100 at Wally-World aka Wal-Mart. That's the only store around here.

shorty, you make Ky sound so unpopulated, there's more civilization here than in Florida.
I know for sure, there's a Staples around you. they have a bunch of good sales on right now, I just bought a whole new cooling set for my pc, go check it out.

Ok, ok there is also an office suppy store (office max or staples) but i didn't think of that. Thanks for the reminder though I'll have to start checking it out more. As far as unpopulated, I've only been down here for about a year and I'm not used to there not being a best-buy, barnes & nobles, or liquor store within a hours drive.

You can buy an ATI radeon x300, they are pretty cheap I had one for the longest and was able to run just about everything. I did have the pci-e.
that one is fairly cheap and works well.
