FPS question and Graphics Card question....
Well its stays around 72.0 or so... but when people start shooting or throwing nades it drops down into the 40's-50's or so. Just wondering if there is anything I can do with my graphics card or any commands to keep the fps from dropping in the heat of battle.
Comp Stats:
Pentium 4 2.60ghz
1.5gigs of RAM
Video card (I have both Radeon X700pro 256mb GDDRB and Radeon 9800 pro 128MB DDR... which should I use)
Also would like to point out I'm a little less then knowledgable on how to put it an an autoexec file... so if you could explain that as well it would be great.

It's normal for your frames to drop in battle. That is more graphical stress, which means it takes more for your machine!

I know that... just wondering if anyone knows how to limit the drop with some sort of command to limit the actions... like rain/fog/smoke... guess doesn't help to much though... and the fps_max 1000 gets me up to 100.0 Then the developer 13 gets me to like 300 or so... just wondering... what's the developer 13 do exactly?

My understanding, and I could be wrong, is that it's for map/mod developers to test the effects of their textures/maps on their framrates.

Fps_max just limits your fps, which it sounds like you had yours at fps_max 72 before. Developer 1 uncaps your FPS from 100.
For 16-bit, just go to your obtions and then I think multiplayer, and change the smoke quality from whatever its at to medium.

alright here's the quickie guide to upping fps...
First of all, make sure you limit the load on your processor before you enter cs. Close any unneccessary programs that may be using processor power.
Second, go with the more powerful graphics card, duh!. Probably the newer one with more memory.
Third, go to 16 bit, tho it makes negligible difference since most of the textures are done in 16 bit anyway.
Fourth, try lowering your resolution. If that helps, it means your graphics card needs to be upgraded. If not, then its your processor is the bottleneck.
Fifth, try some console commands to turn off some eyecandy... like cl_weather 0 to turn of the rain in aztec, or cl_drawweapon 0 stuff liek taht... google for help with that
Sixth, you must realize that some parts are the map makers fault.... there are areas in certain maps that just cause your fps to drop.
Seventh, upping yoru fps_max won't do anything for you... the fps still drops.
Oh btw make sure you have it in opengl mode and not direct3d or software.

So I take it I should close my AntiVirus and Spyware stuff down? I mean the lowest my fps gets it 35... but thats when 10 people all start shooting and throwing stuff at once. And thank you for all the steps to success :P

I would say anything closed would help, but the real question is does it matter if you have like a gig of RAM or more? Or am I wrong and it really does matter?

sniperintraining, my computer specs are pretty similar to yours, except I have an athalon 2.2ghz and 2gb of ram. I use the x700 pcie, and I get 100fps in CZ CONSTANTLY.
Yes, closing out of ANY uneccessary programs will help.
My ram usage sits at about 18-20% when I'm at my desktop, but it jumps up to 24-36% when I'm in a game. The more RAM you have free, the more breathing room you have and the better off you are.
Also, no matter how fast your video card is, your cpu is going to be your bottleneck. The fewer cpu cycles you use by having these programs open, the better performance you're going to see. If you have a sound card instead of onboard sound, you're going to see a boost in overall computer performance rather than just sound-performance. Why? Because with a decent sound card, your processor doesn't have to use those extra cycles to process your sound: that's what the card does.
Anything you can do to reduce the load on your cpu/ram before you play will give you better performance.

I closed them down... didn't notice much of a difference... I think the major change was the ex_interp... other then that I have 0 choke/loss... 20ish ping... Only time it gets choppy is the in regular server when smoke nades are abundant. Thank you though.
