Post Re: Tsunami!
A nuclear power plant's cooling system shut down, so they had to turn everything off and evacuate...and then just a couple hours ago, a 6.6 hit japan, one of the aftershocks of the 8.9 from this morning.

URGENT: Radiation 1,000 times higher than normal detected at nuke plant

TOKYO, March 12, Kyodo

The amount of radiation reached around 1,000 times the normal level Saturday in the control room of the No. 1 reactor of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said.

The discovery suggests radioactive steam could spread around the facility operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co.

FYI it's already March 12 in Japan.

I've got a co-worker who had just landed at Narita airport when the earth quake struck. He has been stranded there. Hopefully he can get out on Sunday. I fly through there on Friday. It should be all clear and most importantly the cool beer machines should be working in the lounge...

A solar flare in 2012 right near the time of the Mayan long calendar ending. The thing is supposed to be strong enough to basically eradicate our power grid.

....just wow, this makes me so glad that I live on a seismic plate and not near the edges of any. I'd take hurricanes over earthquakes and tsunami's anyday.

I can't even begin to comprehend their loss :( One day you are going on about your daily life, enjoying life/struggling to make a living/full of hopes and dreams, and then next day it's all gone. It just reminds me that at any given moment, anything could happen to anyone including me.

Where are they? It took me a few hrs of calling to track down my friends and host family and make sure they were not on any trips to the northern part of the Island. If they stayed west of Tokyo they should be fine.
