Im the somewhat proud owner of a 1979 Volvo 262c bertone.
It shares the same V6 as the Delorian. The PRV-V6.

Anyway. Iv had this beast over a year and have finaly removed all the rust from it. The previouse owner was a dumbass....

For the last few months Iv been scratching my head over the 4th gear and OverDrive issue... in that, it wouldnt switch into OD or 5th.
Its a manual 4 speed with an automatic 5th.

Now, 5th had engaged a few times here and there at random times. So I knew it worked!. Very anoying though. Intermittent problems can drive one quite mad.

I hunted high and low looking for diagrams and such to try and figure out the problem. With no results.
So the other day I decided to bypass all the shit, and run wires directly from the battery to the solanoid. "click". So that works fine.
Close to loosing hope and wireing a switch between the battery and the solanoid myself I decided to manualy trace wires... but ripping up carpet.... :-\
But I did find something kinda odd. The wire running upto the OD switch on the shifter was cut....

So, I stripped some of the wire and tested it..... "click" goes the solanoid.

Now I have to splice the wires together and get the switch back into the circuit. Lots of electrical tape and then Luquid tape later (because its not in a 100% dry location) I took her out for a quick drive.......

4th gear, switch and..... "click" the thing shoots forwards and I almost hit the car infront.
BUT!. I got it working at last.

It seems to stupid that I didnt trace the wires sooner, but the fact that the OD had kicked in a few times before led me to belive the switch was fine.

However, the upshot is the transmition got a complete flush and refil with the correct fluids. AND The solanoid got a cleaning as well as the pressure switch and the 4th gear switch.

Okay. Not if I could just find the source of the nocking in the cylinders and fix that (i think iv got a broken lifter) mechanicaly it will be sweet!.
AND I can retune the carb again since 5th works which means leaving more hondas at the lights again...

I'm trying to figure out how it shot forward when it shifted from 4th to 5th. Maybe from 5th to 4th, but not when shifting up in that high of a gear. That's just not how transmissions work.

On a sidenote: according to fast and furious, if you need to go faster you can always just shift down.

Also change the oil and use some sort of cleaner additive. If it still ticks or knocks time for manual inspection. (pain in the ass) Wearing on the seat or cam side might mean your cam is slightly bent.

I can constantly shift from 5th to 4th and go faster. Terrible cutting!!.
Anyway.

All fixed!. Took it out for a run in i275 and runs fine in 5th. I still need to retune the carb though. Shes a little lacking when I stomp on the gas. My own fault for leaning the mixture when all I had was 4 gears. lol.

It increases in speed because the auto OD isnt calibated properly. Its supposed to change to 5th when I get to around 50mph (or 2,750rpm cruising). ITs not doing that. Its shifting up for a second, then I guess the pressure in the trans fluctuates because its drops back into 4th causing the engine to rev, then since the output is now higher, it shifts back up into 5th and stays there causing a little burst of speed till I remove my boot from the gas peddle.... Im a bit of a lead foot.... hence the choise in car. ;-P
I think I can solve the problem by dropping the pan and changing the trans filter. If the rest of the car is anything to go by, its the origonal filter!.

Of all the cars, the Honda had to be the worst!.
The TBird was the most fun, especialy when I replaced some of the parts and realised I had essentialy a Boss 5.0 V8 HO :-P
The Volvo is the most challanging because, well, like me.... its a forign piece of shit! and finding any kinda of maintenance info on it is next to impossible! lol

That's a true story though. Getting acceleration sometimes works better than your top-speed. If you're able to shift fast enough, the acceleration you get from downshifting could be substantial... assuming your gears are set right for that type of thing. Prefer a low gear from first to second, low from second to third, mid-to-high on third to fourth, and high/highest on fourth and fifth gears. So, turning a corner from fifth and downshifting to third will keep the accel up high so you can blast right back into fourth gear on the outside corner and wind it out on fifth again.

If you're red lining in the middle of a quarter mile downshifting won't make you accelerate, it will shoot a piston out the manifold of your engine.

Did you check your transmissions power supply?

Depending on the gear ratio of his 5th, it's very possible that it would shoot the car forward. After all, you shift up to go faster... Like most overdrive gears, it's probably a low ratio gear mean to keep the speed high and the revs low. Not so much meant for pure acceleration.

Your most likely right about the lifter being the culprit of the knock.Its probably just stuck if its sat up a while.Get some silo engine cleaner.Pour that shit in and let it idle for like 10 minutes then drain your oil and change it.You might get lucky and it will brake free.Worst case is a new cam and lifter set which is cheap and not really hard if you can do it yourself.

Doesn't a little ATF help lifter noise?? That Deloran engine was a total POS from what I remember

Yeah it will help,same principle.I have saw people pour some diesel in the oil and let it idle.Anything to break that sludge loose.

the problem with breaking the sludge lose is that the sludge can clog the sump in the pan and F*CK your engine for good best to do a little at a time like marvel mystery oil 1/2 quart each oil change and baby it during this process
