I agree with the saving money bit. Not being cheapo but do the wedding with style and enjoy the company of family and friends with your new wife on that big day. It is a celebration of a couple. Learn to dance a waltz, dancing a slow song at the wedding will show to your family and friends how well you two will actually get along in the long run.
Start talking with a pastor/preacher/minister about marriage. Its a daunting task and in this process I hope you two will come more understanding of each other.
BTW.. take my advice as just advice, I have only been the best man 3 times and am a lifelong bachelor. I have seen both great marriages and some that I thought would last forever.

as far as wedding, go with what your happy with and know that it IS tradition in America for the father of the bride to pay for it. if he does it or not well, yeah...thats the shitty part isnt it?

if you live in the southwest area, id recomend a place in South Carolina called Rose Hill Mansion. We had our summer wedding outside in the sun and surrounded by very well taken care of roses and what looked to be a secret garden kind of deal. very very nice. on top of that, the owner of the place drops a huge sack of cocane in his hawaiian BBQ meatballs....honestly dude. you try just one...and you will lick his F*CKING toes for the recipie.

for the planning, the master bedroom for the wedding night, free designer bath robes (i wouldent mention it if it waznt important), the garden, chairs, reception and menu with champaines, the big shebang, cooking....only 4 grand. for what your getting there, thats a damn good deal. to top it all off, they were actualy very nice people (the dude who owns the place runs it with his mother, who lives in a seperate guest house. they kind of give you a Bates Motel kinda feeling when you first meet them) and threw in an open bar for free.
