Post Turntable
I want to start collecting and listening to vinyl and I need a turntable to obviously play the records. I'm new at this and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what brand to buy. I don't want to spend a shit load of money buy I want something decent in quality. Hell even if someone has an old one that they are willing to part with that isn't in too bad of shape I would be willing to buy it.

I hear these are coming back into style, what with the whole 2012 thing looming on the horizon. Folks might need alternatives to electrically powered equipment:

For brand, i use JVC or Pioneer. obviously this isnt for scratching, but they have lasted me a long ass time and survived 4 dogs and two kids during 6 moves. i love my JVC.

ONKYO! :P I like that stuff.

Anyway, yah Turkey, it's best to get a player that is just meant for playing than to get dj equipment unless you plan on using it for that as well. Saves money.

DJing would be an awesome side job but not what I want it for. I just want to be able to buy records and listen to them. I think I'll start on Ebay.

Depends on your budget.

My current build only ran me $260 (plus albums of course). It's the Audio Technica AT-LP120 and the Shure M97xE cartridge.
There are others out there, but the AT-LP120 is the best in it's price range. A good alternative to the Shure is the AT440MLA.
The AT-LP120 also has a built-in preamp, so if you can't afford one right now (like me) just switch it to ON and it will work fine. But, after my winter job, I have my eye on this one.

And for getting the actual music, I recommend InSound.com, Punkforpeace.com and Discogs.com. Amazon won't pack them properly, they never do, and they arrive warped. Buying the equipment from there, however, is fine.

EDIT: Ebay is good for albums too, but it's more hit-or-miss than Discogs is.

I'm into vinyl but I have not yet found a place to put anything (technically still homeless) but in this city there are at least three stores that are dedicated to selling records.

Screw the vinyl, go MP3 and get some CDJ's with some B-52's to go with it. Mmmm, yesss.
