All I have to say is that I was reading Gizmodo and this guy said that he though java and android were both open source.

it made me angry face that he was a doo doo head.

Java is Open Source, but that does not mean you are free to take the code and use it to reverse engineer a closed source equivalent. Android is Open Source, but the Dalvik VM is not. Now I am no Oracle fan and I think Larry Ellison is the devil incarnate...I can say that because I had to deal with the guy personally when Oracle acquired one of the startups I was working with as an investor's representative and believe me dickhead does not even begin to describe the guy. Google is clearly in the wrong here, however, and the fact is that they have been repeatedly attempting to circumvent various copyrights and patents for the last several years while using the same mechanisms to the extreme to protect their own intellectual property.

Bottom line is they think that because they are the biggest gorilla in the forest right now they should be able to crap wherever they want and nobody should be allowed to complain about it. I am quite pleased to see that a company with almost as deep of pockets as Google has decided that enough is enough and that behavior has to stop. In the end I think there is little defense for Google, and if they are smart they will settle this one quickly. Oracle's track record in these types of cases is near 100% success...Ellison HATES to spend money, and if he believed for one second that the outcome could be unfavorable they would not have filed suit.

Google has almost always been an open-source company. GoogleTV is a great example of this. They've also hired some of the biggest open-source companies to work on some of their new projects. I think google is taking the right step in creating new entities. It's like the same deal with Apple and their stupid issues with Adobe Flash Player.

F*CK it, I'm on google's side on this one. They've done nothing but release top-notch tools for everyone to use, and I can only imagine what the future holds with their jump into the smartphone industry, as well as becoming an ISP and TV service provider. I have a really good buddy who works for Sun, and hopefully one day, he'll log onto AIM so I can ask him about the whole deal.

Also, the article said "clean room design" but I have more often heard Chinese Wall Engineering -- in either case, my understanding was that it was pretty well established that by appropriately insulating the ones engineering from the ones dissecting and developing specifications, these clones survived legal challenges.
