 Kindle?
Anyone have/use a Kindle? My gf wants one and I'm thinking about buying one for her. Just curious if anyone has used one and if they are worth it. She reads a lot, but I'm curious if there is anything on it that I might use it for, lol.

 Re: Kindle?
I have had one since launch, my kindle.com e-mail address is 1 letter :) So if you sent a PDF to 26 kindle e-mails I'd be one of them.
Mine was a G1, so further generations I assume solved the "oops i hit the next page button 4 times while adjusting my posture, now where was I" problem.
Reading regular books is what the kindle does. I tried to toss some textbook PDF's on, and illustrated stuff, but it just didn't do it for me. There are some neat things in the "experimental" section that you may like, such as the question/answer thing, but other than that you should forget about web browsing, etc.
If it was still $400 or whatever I paid for it back then, I'd say hell no it's not worth it. But I think they're down to what, $99?
They're amazing if you wish you could take a library with you on any given trip and feel like you're reading a book in sunlight or artificial light. That's essentially what they're good for.

 Re: Kindle?
all i know about it is it has a mono-tone, no-backlight display to make it easier on ones eyes. oh, and i think it can open .pdf's. i, myself, don't do anywhere near enough leisure reading to warrant getting one.

 Re: Kindle?
Yeah, I used it quite a bit in the first few months, then it sat in my bag at airports in favor of my smartphone.
The iPad blows it away in terms of versatility (and I have full access to all my Kindle purchases), but you sure as shit can't take the iPad to a beach like you could a kindle. The iPad literally overheats in direct sunlight, it shuts itself down.

 Re: Kindle?
no, the kindle has an E-Ink screen which is the only good screen for extensive reading. so, if ur gonna be reading, lets say a book, u want to use the kindle or some other device with an E-Ink screen. it would not be good to read a book on the iPad, its really bad for ur eyes and u will most likely not even be able to read much because ur eyes will get tired/irritated from the screen. my mom has the Kindle and she loves it, she uses it almost every night to read a book b4 bed. it is a wonderful device, the other devices of its style (the borders or b&n thing and the sony arent nearly as good). id say, since it is pretty inexpensive id say buy it.

 Re: Kindle?
I tend to agree with rexxer. If you're going to read for any length of time, or EVER take it out to the beach, the kindle or other e-ink is the only clear choice.
The strength of the kindle IS that it is a single purpose machine. The iPad, if you bought one for your gf, the rest of you would be fighting for it because you wanted to get a new app and the kid wants to play angry birds.
The ipad is more versatile, but that's a distraction if all she wants to do is read a shitload of books.

I own an ipad and a kindle, and the ipad has a kindle app that reads the exact same books. I've not had the willpower to read anything for more than 30 mins on the ipad (because there's email or facebook to check!) but it does read quite nicely indoors. Outdoors it sucks monkey balls dick.

 Re: Kindle?
so with the kindle could you perhaps read manga? Or go to a site that has manga uploaded there to read? Cause I just spent 3hrs lastnight reading manga on my 26" LCD monitor and I ready weekly on my computer for atleast 30mins to an hr.

 Re: Kindle?
You probably could import manga pdf's to a kindle, and view them, but you'd likely be disappointed. The iPad is a far greater comic reader. But again, it sucks ass in sunlight.

 Re: Kindle?
Hmm...if only the ipad worked fine in sunlight...
I've also been looking around for an e-reader purely for comics and manga.

 Re: Kindle?
Comics are amazing on the ipad. I can't say enough good about it. It's one of the killer uses of the device.
