I've been in for 11 years now -- have not been able to pick up E-6 due to the many many people in my job who are staying in the Navy, so I'm coming up on what's called "High Year Tenure" (those in the Military now should know what I'm talking about)....where they basically boot you out if you cannot pick up rank by a certain year in your career....so, yeah...they have my ass for another three years, which will take me out to my High Year Tenure year of 14 years in. Now, if I pick up E-6 before my three years is up, I'll be able to re-enlist one more time to take me out to my retirement date of 20 years in...

Do you not have a degree in some thing yet joe? Usually if you got a degree they push you up the ladder...my dad was E-6 navy forever and they didnt give him E-7 because he never got a degree (he also joined when they didn't care if you had a degree in anything so he never tried)

Degrees are becoming a bigger part of it -- starting to become a bigger part of it -- but it's not any kind of requirement yet to pick up enlisted rank...it DOES give you extra points going towards your advancement, though, but not any kind of requirement

You know hearing that is quite intriguing as now it seems everywhere now, even the military you need a college education to more forward. I think that's got to be a bitter pill for some in the military who joined out of not wanting to go to college.

In the Marine Corps they would rather you attend resident PME schools then get a college education. So im doing both haha

if you cant pick up E-6 in the next 3 years go sign up for the air national guard. if will get u to your 20 years and their deployments are only 3 months at a time, at most i believe.

my buddy is a F-18 mechanic in the air guard and he loves it

Switch to the Army if you dont get it. Hell with the new re alignment, the Air Force and Navy are practically taking over our branch anyway. You'll be able to get it if you get a degree. I know what you are talking about with people not getting out. Its the economy, most higher enlisted with family members arent getting out. They are finding it too costly to do so. Hell I went back active because of the fact I loved being in the Army, being a medic, and the economy is shit. The only thing I worry about daily is "what am I going to do with my family after work today?"

If that sounds familiar to you, then you know others above you are thinking the same. Which is why the logjam in promotions in all branches now.

if anything joe, if you dont wanna give up the navy, reclass to another MOS. Its what im looking at doing soon as reclassing looks to be a better option than taking my changces finishing up my degree outside the military.

They will more than likely cap you before they let you hit higher tenure unless they just dont like you lol. In my command if they are decent and are going to hit ht they will cap them. Look at me they have givin me to nam's ive only been in the navy 4 yrs lol.
