This is a simple post that I have done since the job market as tanked along with the housing market. It is meant to help people network whatever connections they have to help people in need.

The way I would lioke to see people respond to this post goes as follows:

In the subject line please put if you are a job seeker or if you have a lead on a job. So you should either have "Job seeker" or "Job lead" in the subject, but if you just want to leave a comment on the posting in gen. just leave the standard RE: in the subject line.

As for the body of the post please follow this form:

Subject: Job Seeker

I live in or around (nearest major city)
My skills are in (what you can, would like to do, or college grad degree est...)
I do (or do not) have job experince in this area
Add any other infomation that you think would help someone help you in this endevor.

I hope that this can help anyone either in this clan or forum member to find work in these hard times.

Sir we are not a clan we are a community. Second it's great to know people but you can get a job almost anywhere it wont be what you want but it's a job.

I respect your view but this post is about trying to fine the job you want.

I left a decent job recently, and I haven't has too much luck finding anything.

I didn't want to leave my job, but I was really unhappy there. Because of the economy this place was firing a lot of people and it was busting my morale down so I left.

I'm looking for a job that is maybe closer to my house within 10 miles, and it can be anything since I'm really not interested in what I do or how much money I make right now. I just need to make some extra money since I'm going to school.

I know people are hurting out there in all walks of life. I just wanted to support any of the new bunch of people that I now play with who need a little incouraging.

well, I liked the post...I've seen these forums transform from a place where people just post to flame other people
to actually being a place people can post and get some helpful advice.

I know that I do little things on the forum to help people because I think it's fun.
And actually, I have a lot of job leads so when I find something I might be able to hook some people up later on.

I think a majority of the people that play this game or use the forums are trying to vent some form of frustration, and Real Life stuff just gets in the way of that.

So this guy is trying to do have a grown-up discussion and everybody shits all over it? He's right about our job market. People do network all the time on facebook/linkedin, but it'd be nice to see someone get a job through n00bfest, wouldn't it?

I work for Dell, and have for a bit over 3 years. I do support for Dell/Cisco/Brocade ethernet switches and Dell modular (blade) servers and chassis as well as a few other products like ipKVMs. I'm 23 years old, never finished college, and make more than $20/hr but slightly less than $25/hr -- not gonna be too much more specific about my pay, but I think I do pretty well for someone my age.

I've got a shitload of IT certifications, though. Most of them are Microsoft-related, but I'll be studying for my Citrix XenServer cert here pretty soon, as well as my VMWare ESX 4.0 cert.

Oh, and I figured I'd throw this out here too: if anyone lives in/around Austin TX and needs a job, our client support group is hiring. It's for phone/email support of Dell's client systems (notebooks/desktops/point-of-sale machines/etc). Shitty job, but it's a foot in the door and the pay is around $15-18/hr. They don't do any sort of relocation for this job, so you have to be in the area if you're interested. Hit me up if you are -- send me a copy of your resume along with your email/phone# and I'll pass it along.

These last two posts have renewed my faith in my fellow n00b brothers.

I myself am in computers, with my bread 'n' butter is buildin' gaming rigs. I also deal in "low cost" programs and getting nasty things off computers. An as of last month I have my first business contract as a IT solution expert for a mechanic shop. So anyone with PC needs I am ur Guy, and I do have a computer science degree.

Keep an even keel Red and you'll get along just fine here. If you let smart ass comments let your faith in the n00b community waver, then you should look a little harder at the community-- directly underneath the attitudes, snarkiness, jokes, etc. there's a quite vibrant and supportive community here.

I'm in computers (ERP programmer/analyst) and have a very steady job, but my company isn't hiring anything other than a full fledged CIO with tons of experience. But I'm always willing to give advice if asked.

My first job came directly out of my competitive quake2 team. So think of it exactly like Gman mentioned-- hopefully someone will be able & willing to give someone else a shot. In my case it worked out great.

Best advice, especially to gamers-- don't F*CKING flake out. Stick with something for a year or three, even if it's taking helpdesk calls. Keep a good attitude and do your best, and you will go far.

If your willing to go the extra mile for a badass job then look into this... Nuclear power plant operator. The guys who actually operate the plant.

All you need is: high school diploma and need to be able to pass the entrance exams.

They start at 65k a year and in most cases force you to work over time. If you make a career out if it and become a SRO (senior reactor operator) you can make up to 450k with 6 digit yearly bonuses.

I'll tell you right now, they need young people with computer skills BAD. They still mostly have the same workforce from the 1970s and they are ready to retire. They have a terrible time getting young people to work in this industry because it is extremely stressful and the hours suck, not to mention you get treated like shit because you're the FNG to the old people here. But the money is great and you will have a jerb for a very long time if you wanted it.

Just to add some perspective to this, I am 28 years old, currently working as a full time programmer for the City University of New York. It is a classified civil service position, and my official pay is around the same as Gman's, but I lose 30% of my salary to taxes, so end up making less than him. This is with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science with honors, and while doing my Master's. So he's doing more than well enough for someone his age, especially considering that he did not finish college.

I just got this position 2 months ago. Before that, I was working as a helpdesk technician for my college (client side) dealing with dell computers and software related issues. I have no certifications, just the degree.

Before that I was a computer lab assistant and a tutor. Working for the city is not a great way to make money, but they do give you good benefits and I wanted a full time job regardless of the pay, because I know so many people here with very good qualifications who just can't find one, and I know many who got laid off.

I did only one thing to get from there to here. I worked hard without complaining about anything. As unbelievable as it seemed to me, I got noticed by many higher ups due to that, which is how I moved from lab assistant/tutor to helpdesk tech and from there to full time programmer. This happened despite many others around me applying for the same position with better qualifications and certifications. I didn't take the initiative - I was asked. I know this doesn't happen all the time, but trust me when I say that no matter how lowly you think your current position is, give it all you have and it will be appreciated, and it will open a lot more doors.


Right now I am very greedy for money, and the civil service salary makes me a little depressed, but I am glad to have a steady job and hopefully things will improve in the future. High - I'd love to go nuclear. I'm going to do some research on it.

About taxes -- last year, I made 53 before insurance/401k/etc (4k spent on that -- yeah, I don't put too much in my 401k), so a total of 49 after that. They took out 12k for taxes, so I lose about 25% of my income to tax/fica/medicare.

These are the time I regret F*CKING around so much through my high school years. Gman's not making it much better either lol. I'm about the same age(turn 23 next month), but I sure wish I had done as good.

I live in the Portland Metro area, and so far i've just got experience in Retail stores, Warehouse positions, and Construction. No matter what i've done, i've always been motivated to do my best. If you're not willing to give it 100%, then you shouldn't be applying for the position. One day that will get me somewhere I am satisfied with in life, but for now i'll take whatever I can get.
