Vista should not take 80g of hard drive space...you may want to look into that lol.

Yea, I turned off indexing and it cut down hdd space to 40GB and I was happy but then I updated to Vista SP2 and now its back up to 61GB with progs taking up about 6GB.

Any other suggestions to keep hdd storage space to a minimum would be helpful

i cannot comprehend what is taking up so much space. 40g for a vista install is ridiculous. do you have a ton of ram so the default page file size is gigantic? if you do, that would be my best guess. we have machines at work with 13 gb of ram so the default starting page file size is like 1.5x that, with a max of 2-3x that.

Turn off system restore, and then download and install Cleanup (which I find is better than ccleaner, though it doesn't have a registry cleaner) and run it.

I think I might have done that the first time I installed Vista, I forgot how to do it but I'll look into it again and try Cleanup.


SO its back down to 194GB from 279GB which is frikkin insane. That's 84GB taken up. I thought I turned off indexing but apparently it's still running so I think I turned it off the correct way now. Maybe when I plugged my 1TB drive back in Vista started indexing it.

What's the program/service that Vista uses to monitor what apps I use the most and after monitoring my usage it starts pre-loading them? That may be part of it too.

If you want Windows 7, torrent the RTM version, it gives you a month free. During that month PM me and ill give you a program to activate your OS :) or stick to Vista which is the worst OS ever. I recommend go to 7.

Yeah get one just read reviews to see if its a good copy and then message me I'll email you a program and it'll activate your copy.......as long as you dont download a particular update that will prevent any exploits in the activation. Just when doing windows update avoid the KB971033 update and if theres a diff update that says "This update to Windows Activation Technologies detects activation exploits and tampering to key windows system files. These exploits try to bypass regular Windows activation and are sometimes included with counter feit copies of Windows" NEVER download that and you will be fine forever! I just leave that update unchecked and i update all the other updates becuse Microsoft made that update optional so if you never download it you will always be activated :)

look for an "RTM" version (release to manufacturer). thats what i got and it must have been leaked before 7's public release. oh, and dont forget to get a good crack too.
