 Re: Jobs
My dads friend hooked me up. He just happened to be the head of engineering for Florida power & light.
Ask your relatives first if they have friends who could hook you up. And remember, don't turn your cheek to a job that isn't in your feild right away. I started as a clerk making 13 bucks an hour, and a year later I'm a nuclear coatings planner making close to 70k a year. In this case however, I learned quickly that the work force in the nuclear industry is aging and most retireing within the next 10 years. Anyways I'm sure you didn't need to hear my lifes story but you got it anyway biatch.

 Re: Jobs
Kinda like how you're related to n00bfest & Gman, I got my first out-of-college job from my quake clan's gman.
Prior to that I was searching for jobs, I knew that although I had a certain skillset I'd need to "aim lower" and take an entry level, data entry type job. Esp. in this economy, you're going to be competing with long term professionals for even entry level jobs. So you may have to aim a little lower than you'd like to start off.
Because of my skills & initiative I climbed the ranks relatively fast.
So the secret is: get in the door in the industry you want to go for, even if you're doing really basic stuff. Then, let your personality, skills, & ambitions speak for themselves and you'll be doing what you want sooner than later.

 Re: Jobs
I'll let you know when I get one :(
Graduated in December, can't be an assistant actuary yet because I have to pass a bunch of exams and I'm having trouble finding any entry level analyst positions.
I have one job in Tampa that I'm waiting to hear back from. If I don't get it then I'm going to have to work for my friend's dad's friend which I think means working for the mafia. Seriously.

 Re: Jobs
A buddy of mine's uncle hooked another buddy of ours up with a job, then that buddy hooked me up (and I subsequently hooked up several other folks).
It's who ya know, man.

 Re: Jobs
You know how I found my job? This guy in a Navy uniform came to my high school and made this little spiel...then I went and got a job.

 Re: Jobs
I've had a lot of jobs. My first out of college was an advertising agency, and I was a secretary. I found out the hard way that I got the job cause the boss thought I was hot. I got sexually harassed, complained, and they fired me. LOL.

 Re: Jobs
i got 3 job offers by posting my resume on monster.com and forgetting about it and three headhunters called me and gave me jobs, lol. of course they were all short contracts with the potential to be real jobs, only 1 of them panned out tho, but i F*CKING hated it so after the two months i didnt even ask for the full time.

 Re: Jobs
well you know how it goes...
some lunatic flys a plane into a tower and next thing you know, BAM. i got a job. although being an IT specalist isnt exactly the rough neck version of the army i had expected. the most combat training i get is how to hit someone over the head with a keyboard without popping out any of the keys.

 Re: Jobs
well odd jobs, like bus boy, waiting, prepcook. most of what your gonna find at your age is at resturants and fast food joints. you can probably find some off the wall position somewhere else but the bulk of the highschool/collage jobs are in this area

DAMN, you're a baby, the same age as my son! He has the same questions. He wants to work at the AMC nearby. Best thing to do is to get out there and submit your applications, and FOLLOW UP with phone calls to the manager to make sure they saw it. That tends to impress them, if you show that you really want the job. And yes, I had several jobs before college, like Burger King, Loews, and an amusement park.

Pit_Stop wrote: Have any of you ever had a job before college Yeah...I never went to college, but I had the same job all through-out highschool...was a dishwasher, then a cook at a local bar/restaurant where I grew up at...got it because a friend of mine just applied there, too, and said it was an awesome place...so I went, applied, they liked me, so I was in.
