Post Lenovo? Anyone
Thinking of picking one of these up for my mother for Christmas, anyone know anything about Lenovo quality?

Comments on if this looks like a pretty decent deal.

Lenovo's I've used were tanks, and top notch quality. All laptops. If not mistaken, this used to be IBM's consumer hardware branch-- and may still be.

That seems like a WHOLE LOT of computer for your mother. Is she a gamer? If she doesn't need 8gig ram, etc. you could probably save a couple hundy on a very capable, more attractive, but not so maxxed out machine.

Also, don't afflict your mother with a Vista machine :)

I owned an IBM Thinkpad before they sold off all consumer brands to Lenovo.

It was one of the most solid laptops I've ever owned. I haven't really experienced Lenovo, but I don't think IBM would sell off assets like that to some two-bit chump corporation, so I'd highly recommend one.

I used to work for a place that does IBM and Lenovo warranty work. Where I work now, all we use are IBM's (well, the older machines) and Lenovo's. Their workstations really are quality machines. We got these $15,000 Lenovo workstations to run AutoCAD Inventor, with 12g RAM, dual quad-core Xeon's, dual nvidia Quadro cards, F*CKING things are C*CK diesel. But, Lenovo is fully capable of making shit too. I thing of it like Ford. Yes, they make the GT, but they also make the escort. You get what you pay for.

That machine you got there looks really decent, tho. Looks like a good buy

I was under the impression that she would get a free Windows 7 upgrade...

http://techblissonline.com/free-windows-7/

She's not a gamer, she just asked for a super fast/quality machine. She wanted the most bang for her buck. Been looking since black Friday and this is what I came up with.

They did have this one I was thinking about, but I felt for $50 more dollars she got 2gb more mem and the 1TB HD instead of the 640GB.

TV tuner
Hybrid tuner, support analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC) signal, hauppauge Win TV-HVR-1250, PCIe x 1

But this one came with the TV tuner which I thought might be a plus.

Also wanted to stay away from Dells, HPs and Gateways, All suck ass (Indian tech supported) and also thought Intel core 2 quad would out perform the AMD stuff.

Ahh cool, yeah if she wants a screamer go that route. And assuming that newegg is shipping these things with the Win7 certificate (you may want to check prior to order), you're golden. If Lenovo is still putting out similar quality stuff to when I last used it, it's a great buy.

I had a T41 thinkpad and I think I threw it 10 times and dropped it countless times, i sold it to a friend and it still works to this day.

For $519, that's a very nice rig. She could even source on it no problems

I love when people talk shit about brands with minimal experiences to back them up.

My first week at my company we had 10 Lenovo's come in and all 10 had bad wireless network cards. Took over a month before we finally sent all of them back and forced them to upgrade them. After that we started ordering Dell's. This was 2 years ago and we now have about 60 Dell laptops out in the field and I haven't had to send one of them back.

That being said, my laptop that I have used for over 2 years is a Lenovo and I haven't had any problems with it. Also, if you do much travelling, look at the laptops that consultants are using on the planes and in the airports. I bet you the majority are carrying Lenovo's, it's the most common laptop in the consulting world, in my experience.

Agree.

My dell laptop for work is F*CKING fantastic, I've dropped it, travelled with it to amsterdam through heathrow and back (heathrow is hell on any bag, ask anyone) and the only thing i've had to replace in 4 years is the battery. It's amazing really.

I've never owned a lenovo desktop...but I'm typing this on a lenovo thinkpad right now. It's pretty damn solid. It's been through hell and back for a couple of years and it's still going on strong.
