why not just go with a double barrel 12 with rock salt rounds? its big and intimidating, but perfictly non-lethal and as long as you dont mind some shredded drywall, u can shoot first and ask questions later without the risk of killing someone.

dont know much bout guns, am an archer myself, but i do know how getting shot with rocksalt feels. get a nice spray in the chest, and you WANT to die.

The only experience I have with rocksalt is watching Mia (or whatever her name is) get hit in Kill Bill 2. Looked very ouch.

Thanks I'll ask her if she's tried that handgun yet. My family suggested a revolver for her for safety issues more than anything else.

I hate jumping in to threads I know nothing about (read: me lying), but I can't even begin to see how this would be an issue. You'd literally have to be perceiving about 1% of your environment for them to get that close.

What if they break in while you're asleep? You run to grab the gun, but they nearly beat you to it. You go to fire it at their face, and they grab the cylinder before you get a chance to get the hammer pulled back. There's always going to be some potential scenario in which you'll be vulnerable, and it's always best to mitigate the possibilities for something to go wrong BEFORE it actually happens.

That scenario relies far too much on multiple what-ifs that come together perfectly though.

I understand what you're saying, but I just don't believe it's really something the average person needs to take in to consideration as the chance for the event salad to homogenize is so small.

I use an RPG-7 for home defense.

I personally have the 870 and it is a badass gun. Very light and straight shooter. Would never change it for anything else. Ive played around with a Mossberg but to me they feel really cheap with all the plastic. Ive seen alot of guns (work in the gun department @ my store) and nothing beats the 870.

Though ive shot 1 before, im new to guns still, but feel the need to own a 12 gauge pump shotty in case i ever had a problem at my house.

I love the 870. Family has one. It looks so badass.

The Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 are both excellent shotguns. With regard to functionality, they're both effectively the same. The Remington is going to cost you a couple hundred bucks more than the Mossberg, but if you're trying to get a shotgun on the cheap, there's no reason to get the Remington over the Mossberg.

I've got a Mossberg 500c -- it's a 20gauge pump that has been pimped out with a pistol grip, shortened barrel, and an ammo-holder on the left side of it. Pretty baller, and one of the best home defense weapons one could have. 20ga won't overpenetrate as much as 12, and the recoil is a lot less (big factor when you take all of the recoil in the palm/wrist).

Only thing is, many years ago, I plugged the barrel with dirt while walking in a field, and when I fired it, the barrel split Elmer Fudd style. Haven't fired it since; I really need to pick up a new barrel for it. :(

gman, you confirmed my thoughts on the 20 gauge. my dad has a 20 gauge, and i've been torn between 20 and 12 for my pistol grip. my buddies have been telling me to get a 12, but i know they haven't shot a pistol grip shotty before. takin recoil to the shoulder with a 12 gauge is no prob, even for my little ass (yes i am a pretty small guy, 5'5" and slim), but put that force at the end of a lever (arm/wrist) and it's a whole different story.

What is the recoil like compared to the shoulder and your pistol grip? And seeing the barrel is shorter does that create more recoil or less? (gun noob please forgive me)
