Hey guys,

I'm going on a week-long camping trip in the North of Québec in 2 weeks. We're going to be around 40km from the nearest town, it's going to be awesome.
I already own a really good tent, sleeping bag and all of the other essentials, but I'd really like to buy myself a nice hunting knife that will be versatile while I'm in the woods for a week.

I'd like to get your opinions on the best hunting knife under 150$. The important points for me are:

1. Quality of build
2. Sharpness/quality of blade
3. Versatility (if it can do more than cut shit, that's a plus)

Also, I don't want a machete. I'd like to be able to put it on my belt and not have it bother me while hiking/walking around.

I know a lot of you are into guns/knives and all that, so let me know what you think! What would you buy?

So after looking at knives and talking to salesman for about an hour, I ended up buying a knife. I settled on a Puma SGB Elk Hunter. I really like the feel of the wood handle, it's wide enough to get a good grip on it, plus the polished brass is a nice touch. I used it a lot during the last week ( I went back country camping) and my only complaint is not in the knife itself but the holster. The belt loop isn't Velcro so I had to take my belt off when I didn't want to bring my knife with me. Not a big issue, more of a minor nuisance.

I have to say i am a fan of the Tom Brown Tracker as it is very versatile and multifunctional. The shape of the blade is well used down here in Florida for palm tree leanto's and opening coconuts where other knifes just don't do the job. its a bit on the higher end of your price range but great knife in my opinion.

I have a Buck 110 and it works really well. Some really good brands in that price range are: CRKT, Benchmade, Kershaw, and SOG. Make sure whatever you get is coated or stainless if you're going to use it for every-day carry or camping/fishing. Once you get the knife, have the shop you buy it from sharpen and polish/de-bur the blade, or de-bur it with some leather or denim after you get it and it should be pretty sharp.

Very nice, I always like weapons that have been tested and used by military forces.

What do you guys think about skeleton type knives? I really like the look, but I have big hands and it seems like it would feel very small and flimsy in my hand. Thoughts?

My friend has a Benchmade that his brother-in-law got for him and he's never sharpened it or anything, the tip is even broken off, but that knife is still sharp as it was when he got it like....2-3 years ago I believe is when he got it. I once cut myself with it and had to get 6 stiches(don't ask ._.); twas a nice straight, clean cut. I don't really know much about knives but I know a couple people, including the person I mentioned earlier, that have Benchmade knives and they really like their knives.

looks a lot like that except his is a lot less shiny and a little rust just because he never cleans it or anything :P but it's still a really good knife and I still like it. I myself have only sharpened it once(no idea if he has) and that thing was pretty damn sharp even though i used a crappy sharpener(no idea what it was so don't ask).

I swear by Kershaw and CRKT. I edc a Kershaw Leek and will be buying a Kershaw Blur, soon. Look through both companies' catalogs.

I've owned knives from every maker that cost $150 and ones from the dollar store over the years and I always come back to my Buck 110 folder for everything!

For camping I used to use a Gerber LMFII Infantry but its bulky so I started on the 110 again.

For Hunting I used to use a swing blade because Uncle Ted said to, back on the 110 again though.

Everyday carry I use a Spyderco Endura with an Emerson opener. It rides in my left pocket so my pistol can ride the right. If for some reason I can't find it when I leave the house I belt the 110.

Buck knives are not the best quality in the world but the price reflects that. I've had mine for years and its had some rough use but I can still gut a deer, split the pelvis and peel a tomato when I'm done. I think they run around $60. *Edit just found them on Amazon for half that.*

This is the one I carry in my hiking trips/kayaking expeditions all the time. It's light, versatile and pretty cheap. Been using it all summer, and honestly, every tool on it has been useful so far. Also bring it for kayaking, when we have to climb down some canyons when we go creeking, can be pretty useful to quickly cut the ropes/belts.

Also, I'm probably going to get a Buck 110. They are really nice.

you really dont want a Velcro sheath makes the chances of you loosing it during the hunt happens alot you think you would hear the velcro rip but some dont cause they are so focused on the hunt

Yes, that's one of the things I liked too. Big blade and handle, feels like very good quality when you're holding it. It was $79.99 plus tax.
