In light of the two shooting tragedies this week, we've seen an increasing amount of debate on the issue of gun control. There's already plenty of discussion on that going on here, but one interesting point that I've come across comes from military veterans saying they have "earned the right to have whatever I want, since I've served in the wars".

I don't really feel either way about it, but I was curious how our veterans feel regarding other veterans using this reason as a means for their actions.

Sound off, but please be factual and provide personal stories to back your ideas. Let's keep it civilized.

Majority, if not all members are gun enthusiasts, a large sum from that majority are actually gun users, therefore doing anything with "gun control" is just asking for trouble...or just a brash amount of posts vividly telling you what will go down if someone tries to take their guns.

I'm hoping we can change that. We have had some civilized discussion before, and I'd like to see more of it.

I'm not going to bite on the telling me it isn't going to work. Maybe I'm a dreamer, but I think we could use a little bit more discussion.

I fully respect our veterans and admire their sacrifices. I'm more curious about how people feel about the people that use the "you're really going to treat a veteran like this? I saved our country!" responses. Can't we just attempt to talk about it?

I think it can be done in a 'civilized' manner.
Obviously I am not a veteran, but my grandfather is.
He is the type of person that does everything for himself and doesn't like to deal with people.
I know for a fact that he would disagree with the excuse said veterans are using. Not because they are wrong, but because that is how he is.

My grandpa is the same way. He's always been the person that wants to be known as "grandpa" or "Dave", without any other title or recognition. I think that's a quality that I admire most out of him. One of my best friends has served three tours in Afghanistan, and has never once pulled the special treatment card. I guess my view is that we should give them special treatment, but they shouldn't demand it, and they can lose respect just like anyone else.

How about the argument that I should be able to have whatever types of firearms I want because the Bill of Rights uses the words "shall not be infringed"?

I think you're entitled to own anything except shit like an RPG, lol. I do think that our laws are outdated and governed more by modern interpretation, because the the second amendment was implemented Over two hundred years ago for the purpose of taking up arms in a militia.

I will bite as a devil's advocate here:
The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; a well armed, and well regulated militia being the best security of a free country: but no person religiously scrupulous of bearing arms, shall be compelled to render military service in person.

First point, it isn't well regulated at all, and secondly, militia does not apply to every single breathing American.

The second amendment is, and perhaps purposely so, ambiguous. The initial intent was to protect the people from the government.

I don't really fall on either side of the argument, but gun ownership as an inalienable right seems a little bit of a reach.

As a Texan, I have bought over a dozen various guns at gun shows with zero inquisition into my fitness to own them.

I think there is something there that needs to at the least be tweaked.

"Well regulated" means "people who know how to use guns," not "under heavy government regulation."

I feel they have earned the right to own a firearm. I mean, why not? Our country most likely trained them how to use it in a safe and effective manner. They handed over a portion of their own life to serve our country.

But the same goes for a lot of citizens with no military service. They do a lot to deserve the right as well. So a veteran shouldn't be able to throw out the Vet card and get extra special attention. I feel the ones that deserve extra privileges would be the vets that sacrifice their own freedom, do the time, and when it's all said and done, they don't request shit. Those are the ones I respect the most.

I'm talking more than just firearms though. I'm talking the whole "entitlement" that comes with a veteran status. Some veterans choose to use this card when they feel like someone makes them feel bad. A recent example would be Badguy saying "how dare you treat a veteran like this" towards Gman a couple months back. How do you feel about veterans saying they should be given a free pass for how they act?

I believe in Switzerland there is a law that veterans MUST keep their service firearm in their home once they retire. I'm not sure if it's to discourage burglary or for a militia-related reason.

Switzerland has a unique military in that is a Conscript Militia combined with a modern professional force (as well as the still have Compulsory service).

I think it would really depend on the situation, and the person using the veteran card. If they are like Badguy was, and they use it as soon as they feel like they're backed into a corner, or when things arent going the way they want to. Then I feel at that point they have lost any entitlement to a free pass.

Personally I favor open carry in every state. I don't like concealed carry, but I would like to see open carry in every state.
