For those of you who don't know Steam has been working on porting Steam to Linux. They released a beta client a few weeks ago that was leaked and allowed people to login and play games only if you had a beta invite. Recently they have opened up TF2 to anyone who has downloaded the client.

That's great to hear, and... also sad.

The PC is slowly becoming terrible for gaming, and I'm feeling the game companies are starting to realize this as well. Linux is going to become a main market for PC gamers it seems. I'm excited to hear it, but I'm also a bit worried; not for change, but for stability based on independently-made API's and compatibility. This could really shift the market in a bad way over to consoles, which I really hope doesn't happen. Some games just belong on a PC, and some belong on a console, and I like to keep it that way.

What exactly do you mean? FPS's are and have been the best to play on the PC, at least until consoles implement a mouse and keyboard for more precision. Everything else I guess could technically be better on a console but it's also possible for them to be playable on a PC with a console controller.

FPSs are supposed to be played with a mouse and keyboard. Shooters on consoles can suck my dick. Talk about no precision whatsoever.

I will always be a PC gamer no matter what.

I've got nothing against consoles. I, like many of us, grew up playing old school NES, Super Nintendo, Sega, N64, etc.

But, FPSs should always be PC because of the controls. I can't stand playing shooters on consoles. Only shooter I'll play on console is Halo.

What I mean is this:

http://kotaku.com/5936535/windows-8-is- ... t=52089677

As much as I hate Kotaku, they're right. The thing is... people are saying "Then just don't upgrade to Windows 8, nobody's forcing you!" but the reality is that they are. Every time Microsux releases a new OS, they stop supporting one. Eventually, that'll be Windows 7. Where will gamers go then? What new OS shall we buy?

Gamers buy OS's for two reasons -- compatibility for games, and ease of use. We could give a rat's ass whether the Metro screen looks like it was built for XBOX as long as it ran our games flawlessly. But therein lies the problem. It doesn't run them good, it throws your games all over the place, waiting for you to play hide-and-seek, developers now have to make entirely new, flawed, drivers for an OS that has just been released, and they won't get it right for a long time. Think about all the service packs that'll end up being released before things are really stable.

I really hate how an OS works flawlessly, then a new one comes out trying to revolutionize the world just for market share and competition against Apple. Nobody cares if I can take my phone out and use Windows on it, then use it on my XBOX, and then my PC. What we care about is that the information we store on those devices will remain on those devices safely and securely with ease of access. Windows 8 attempts to revolutionize gaming and make everyone go out and buy an XBOX controller so they can play video games on their PC or simply navigate their desktop's screen easily. The mouse and keyboard have worked just fine for me since I was twelve years old, and there isn't a goddamned thing that's going to change that.

tl;dr tommy hates people who are in the business of making money.

Are you serious? You're bitching at a software company (M$) for putting out software at the same time you're praising other software companies (game companies) for doing the same. Do you know how Microsoft stays in business? They stay in Business by selling products. If you already have a license for Windows 7, you're an expense as far as they're concerned. They want you to get on board with Windows 8 so they can get more money out of you. They're not doing it because they're an evil corporation. They're doing it because they're in business to make money.

You think Microsoft is bad? They've put out 3 operating systems in the last 10 years: Vista/7/8. Fedora has put out 17. The retard who wrote that article has no idea what he's talking about.

At the end of the day, people who want to bitch and complain will always find a reason to bitch and complain.

This.

The guy even admitted to having very little experience with reviewing an OS and the majority of the page was bitching about how clunky and difficult it is to find your solitaire stats. I've been running win 8 pro since the week it came out and I haven't had a single issue with steam or minecraft(other than tekkit or the sever being buggy)

I've fiddled with Win8 and I think it sucks.

I'm sticking with Win7 until I absolutely have to upgrade for compatibility.

I actually like Win7 for the most part so I consider Win8 a downgrade.

I'm not on Windows at all. :P

Okay I lied. I'm on Windows right now, but I'm not at home or on my own system.

Virus's information is music to my ears, and while I'm glad that a major company in the gaming industry is getting behind Linux in such a major way, I've read that Blizzard has a linux version of WoW that is used for internal testing but they won't release it because they don't want to get into the bees nest of targeting specific distros. Basically, I'm hoping that Valve's Ubuntu gambit pays off, and that they know what they're doing with regards to the whole infinite flavors of linux thing.

I think you're missing the entire point of that post, and I don't think the writer of that article doesn't know what he's talking about. If he's so retarded, name me one thing... one thing that Windows 8 brings to the table that is so F*CKIN' wonderful for any of us.

You can't just shit on one of your main sources of income (the PC gaming market) to appeal to Ma and Pa who still don't have a F*CKING clue how to operate Windows XP from years ago. Not to mention the fact that the majority of the market isn't running a Windows phone. Metro didn't make it easier for Ma and Pa to figure out Windows, and it certainly didn't make it easier on gamers or more experienced users of Microsoft products.

I don't hate businesses who want to make money, I hate businesses who do STUPID F*CKING SHIT to make money, like shitting on their own market and releasing an OS that runs and feels like a shitty port of Resident Evil from console to PC. Look at the sales of Windows 8, that's enough said alone.

The difference between Windows and Linux is that Linux isn't always out to make tons of money. Any Unix/Linux system will have tons of updates since they operate off individualized APIs. It's the same thing for a Macintosh. Let's not also forget Service Packs and the hundreds of Windows Updates per week/month/year that we have to sit through and restart our computers for. The great thing about Linux is that even if a new distro comes out, yours isn't necessarily obsolete. Even if it was, it's still free. That doesn't make linux the best for gaming, but Windows seems to be surely pushing PC gamers out of the door and welcoming consoles more than anything else.

So yes, I AM glad that Valve is providing COMPATIBILITY by offering a client for Linux... and yes, I AM pissed at Microsoft for trying to appeal to a crowd that really, truly doesn't exist.

I was googoo-eyed over Windows 7, but this... this isn't Windows... this is "Market Catch-up 8", and it looks, plays, feels, and runs like a shit OS.

Post Re: Steam Linux
Windows 8 definitely isn't geared towards gamers. I mean, the only real differences between 7 and 8 is 8 has better ARM processor support (no one cares) and the interface that 'customer's asked for'.

The back end is pretty much the same, save for task manager and a couple of subtle changes that no one will probably notice. And the server side of things beings a few new cool things around, but nothing any of you would be concerned with.

Windows 8 is not that bad. Sure you don't like change. I don't like Obama either, but F*CK it. It's just a goddamned operating system. I've played a shit ton a games on it just fine. (Except for Doom II, having some issues with Doom II.)

The market for tablets, touch PCs, bigger cell phones and laptops is doing nothing but expanding. This is Microsoft's shift towards trying to integrate with that to give users a similar interface across all devices and ease of inter connectivity.

Also, you can't support something forever. Everything becomes outdated, re-worked, re-done, re-penis'd at some point.

Now, stop this nonsense and lets talk about what is really driving our hate. Obama.

F*CK that guy.

:D

Is the first attempt to unify OS's to be somewhat coherent between three platforms; sure it may not be great whatsoever, but hell it's an attempt.

Reasonable, I agree.

Not reasonable, it's been a what...hardly a month since full release?

Sorry, that has now weight in my book, I want something that's widely used and supported. Sure Linux has it's diehard and supportive user-base but by god is it easier to get into simple windows bullshit than Linux.

Last time I checked, Linus was giving the middle finger and saying F*CK you to nvidia and until nvidia give Linux full pledged support or even half ass support that AMD gives it ain't going no where anytime soon. On top of that the resources and money involved to support multiple OS (this would be Valve's third) is F*CKING ridiculous. Include trying to sway developers to follow a potentially risky financial and technical feat of supporting two OS per release when most companies got their handful trying to support the one OS is too much not matter what rebuttal you have to say it would be easy.

What the plus side of me wanting to play TF2 in Linux when I have to switch over to play the other various games I want to play. It's dumb

Honestly people are going to suck it down and move on and adopt new platforms of something their familiar with than abandoned them completely to learn entire new ones. Sure I'll give you that there will be those that make the switch, but you're not getting a revolution here. Shit will remain constant and the money will stay in the same place.

LOL.

First attempt at unifying what? A F*CKING GUI? No F*CKING cloud storage, no time machine, no F*CKING shared devices. But wait, there's LIVE! I can log into LIVE and chat (not even play) with my friends on XBOX! AWESOME!

Second, do you honestly think sales are going to increase now for Windows? Nope, damn sure aren't. What WILL increase is the number of pirated copies of Windows 8, though! It's completely F*CKIN' reasonable.

Personally, you can disagree if you like, I could give a rat's cooter about it. The facts are this:

1. No big company uses huge F*CKING touch screens for getting shit done. So that knocks out the Enterprise market.
2. No consumer on a PC benefits from having an OS that supports a touchscreen GUI.

Guess who benefits from it? The mobile market. But, even then, there's a better market called Android or even iOS out there that will sync all your data between all three systems... from tablets to cell-phones and PC's. Yet, Windows still does not. Instead, they release an OS that focuses on grabbing market-share from Apple and Android, but provide absolutely nothing for a PC user.

I will bet you money right now that Windows 8 sales are always horrible. Nobody sees the need to upgrade their machine to get a cooler looking UI and a F*CKING neato-looking task manager. Tablets are cell-phones are, and will always be different than a PC. One of the greatest things about a PC is its openness and customization, Windows 8 takes a huge dump on Steam by providing competition in a shitty way.

What way is that?

Get rid of accessibility to Steam, and make your own competition called Windows Store.

You guys are right, it's all about making money. But you can't make any money with a shitty product called Windows 8 that looks like a cell-phone, but works like a tablet, and attempts to play like an XBOX but fails because it won't support cross-platform gaming (PC and XBOX) when its built to do just that.

Not necessarily increase in the fact that people are going to be buying Win8 discs but people will be buying new PCs with Win8 and that's still money in the bank.

Oh you shouldn't have mentioned that people would want to pirate because you go against your argument that people will WANT it. I thought your argument was that no one wants it and it's going to tank badly.

Post Re: Steam Linux
This is anything but the future of computing. I'm not saying people will want it, I'm saying people will steal it because they can.

Let's face it, it was a truly bad attempt at revolutionizing the consumer's idea of what's easy to access and use. You can't just hand someone a cheese-grater and call it a slap-chop man. The same thing applies with Windows. You can't just put a Metro UI on it, and call it easy to use for everyone. It's not easy for PC users to use.

My first post in this thread was about how I felt good about it and bad. I felt good that Steam was moving to more platforms, but I felt bad that MS is now pushing consumers away from PC gaming just to make them buy a F*CKING shitty XBOX. I like my PC because it does everything a tablet, a cellphone, and a console can do. There's no need for MS to change that, that's what every consumer loves about their PC -- limitless possibilities. So now that MS is shutting outsiders down to hog marketshare (For example: LIVE on PC, which is completely uselss, and Windows Store, which is also completely useless...) the only thing they can do is sit back and watch the poor reception to Windows 8 will be. Even at a price of 30-something bucks, it's failing miserably. I'm happy to see that, because it tells Microsux that PCs are PCs for a reason, they don't need to be, and never needed to be changed. Neither did the OS. They just need to work, and be compatible, safe, and stable... something that no thought whatsoever was even put into.

EDIT: I do want to mention that I think W8 is a GREAT OS, other than the GUI, apart from the fact that it brings nothing new to the table (which, in reality, let's face it... it never has brought anything new to the table). This, I think, is the first time Windows has released an OS that was pretty decent compared to its previous release, as MS tends to release bad OS's every other chance they get.

I have to disagree. Win7 was good when it came out. I liked it immediately and it worked well, for me at least. Win8 is garbage. It's for idiots. Like Macs. People who are too stupid to use a real computer. Those kind of morons can suck my dick.

The problem isn't that micro$hit is trying to make money, the problem is that they pretty much have a monopoly. If you're a gamer. Macs are completely out. What's left? Windows.

Other companies who are in it to make money, which there is inherently nothing wrong with, is that if you don't like their product, you don't have to buy. If I don't like Pepsi, I don't have to buy it. I don't HAVE TO buy a Ford or I don't HAVE TO buy a Chevy. There are options out there. This is NOT THE CASE for computers and gaming. There is no "free market" like there is for must stuff.

If you are a gamer, you are basically fucked and must use windows. Therefore, THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG when a company does shit like this just to make money. Because it's not like any other product. You can't just say, "No, I'll go with a different product." YOU HAVE NO OPTIONS. When you have no other options (the definition of a monopoly) then it is wrong when they make worthless operating systems like win8. It's like car insurance. If you want to drive a car you have to buy car insurance. If you want to game, you have to use windows. Problem is, there's lots of different auto insurance companies, but only 1 shitty micro$hit and only 1 windows.

I am completely in favor of game developers to start supporting more OSs like Linux. The problem, is I need an OS that I can use for gaming AND utilities. Video editing/playing, warez downloading, MP3s, pictures, sound editing, browsing, burning, Ventrillo, Winamp, torrents, messaging/video chat, and good old customizability. Windows is really the only OS that can do everything and anything I need it to do. (Don't forget Tor Browser and the deep web too.)

So, it's complete bullshit that micro$hit takes a huge dump all over its customers faces by making garbage software like win8, which is more like Win7.5 anyway, just shittier, and made for the stupid masses type GUI. People like me are at the mercy of micro$hit's whims and that's not okay. If that's the kind of shit they're gonna pull, then I'm just gonna pirate their software. They can suck my dick.

Post Re: Steam Linux
I agree with you, but I still think it's a pretty solid OS. It runs fine, doesn't crash. It just wasn't made with PC users in mind as you've said, and that gets to me, because, as you've already said.. there aren't any alternatives. There aren't, and I refuse to purchase a shitty, cheap OS just to be upgraded or look cool.

Post Re: Steam Linux
tl;dr tommy hates the gui so he's going to shit all over Microsoft for releasing a new OS.

Seriously though, what's with all your hate for Windows? You use Windows, right? If it's so shitty, why the F*CK aren't you using something else? There are plenty of alternatives out there.

New versions of operating systems cause pain on developers. That's a given. They're software companies, and they know how to handle it. They'll grow past it or they'll fold, and if they fold because they can't keep up with the times, then they're shitty companies with shitty developers and they deserve to fail. MS is not trying to push people away from PC gaming. They realize that they're losing market share to users running MacOS and Linux and they're going to be forced to make something better-suited to gaming. Demand drives businesses. What you're saying is right in line with the conspiracy-theorist new-world-order evil-corporation shit that Badguy and Cyning were preaching months ago.

Yes, I am. I'm using Win7, I don't think it's shitty. I like it. Best OS they've ever made in my opinion.

Really? Like what? Can it do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING I need it to do like windows can? Serious question. Not sarcasm.

Agree.

Sure hope not. Seems like it sometimes.

I sure hope you're right.

I just hate how gaming seems to be headed towards consoles. The computer game aisle at best Buy used to be an entire aisle, now, it's 3 feet long and the bottom half of a shelf that's almost hidden.

Me or someone else? What conspiracy type stuff are you talking about? That microsoft has a monopoly on gamers? Because they pretty much do. There's Linux, but it still doesn't do everything I need it to do.

My response was to acid -- you replied right before I did (I went to smoke and didn't realize I didn't submit it before I got up).
