Just did a presentation today on Bitcoin, went well and really got me interested into it, especially its use of cryptographic hash functions. Makes me realize that if you had to rethink our entire monetary system, they certainly wouldn't of came up with the one that we had now.

For those that don't know what bitcoin is, well its complicated but basically can allow anyone to transfer(send or receive) money, by phone, computer (internet) without the need of a bank or credit card company verifying it, and you don't need any money to receive payments (banks make you deposit money before they will take anymore of your money from someone else) It isn't pegged to any currency but floats and can be exchanged on an open market.

Yeah, but the thing is while credit card companys like chase are trying to lure you in with payments over your phone, there is a open source verision of it. With no bank charges or fees Also mastercard is about to start working with bitcoin letting you use a card.

Banks and credit card companies give you a heck of a lot of benefits to go along with those fees and charges.

For example, bank deposits are insured, if the bank gets robbed, you get your money back. If a bitcoin exchange gets robbed, too bad too sad, all your money is gone.

There's also fraud protection in credit cards, if someone buys something using your CC, you can dispute the charges and not have to pay. If someone buys something using your bitcoins, too bad, too sad.

There's tradeoffs with everything. In exchange for the anonymity, privacy and no fees that bitcoin offers, you give up protection, stability, and accountability.

I'm pretty sure you can take your "bitcoin wallet" and put all your bitcoins on a flash drive and then they are safe. Provided you don't lose that. But, you can lose cash too.

the idea of bitcoin is actually good, but look what its tied to:

1) Darknet which means most people will never hear of it.
2) Illegal activities, primarily CP, and identity theft
3) Its not hard currency, or even currency period
4) its used in Eve Online and Second Life, probably the worst part of it

it was a cool science project, but it was launched with the intention of supporting illegal shit on a global scale.

I think all this stuff about it only being for CP and drugs is a load of bullshit. There's a surprising amount you can buy with bitcoins.

It is "real" currency. Just as real as this paper we think is valuable, but it's really just paper. If you can exchange it for cash, how is it not real?

Because no one really controls it and it can't be manipulated, it's actually a better currency and more stable than countries money.
