Post Re: any hvac repair guys or gals here?
LOL sorry just caught this, I am a Hvac repair tech. Caps do hold a charge but alot of them have 30k ohm bleed resistors built in so they dissipate all voltage while shut off. In hind sight if this happens again just take a screw drive and short the terminals. If there is anything in there it will throw a spark but you wont get hurt, but try and be careful ( like dont stand in water while holding the metal of a screw driver while doing this). Next thing to note is there are 2 kinds of capacitors used in hvac, start which are black and run which are metal. Most condenser units caps are dual caps, 1 for the condenser fan ( anywhere from 5-7.5 Micro farads) and one for the compressor (usually from 35-50 micro farads). If you look on the top of a Dual cap it will have 3 terminals a Fan terminal a C or common Terminal and a Herm terminal (compressor). Make sure you bring in 1 leg of power to c and then connect the start winding of the fan and the compressor to the appropriate terminals. Easiest way to know which goes where is to A) wire by wire swap the 2 or B) look at the diagram on the inside of the panel it should be color specific. Lastly when you change a cap out you can put a cap in that is within + or - 5% of the micro farad rating anymore or less and you can damage your equipment. If you guys ever have a problem, own a multi meter and know how to use it, I can walk you through trouble shooting most Electrical problems on a furnace or a/c. Glad you got it fixed just make sure you have the right size since its not 1 size fits all.
