It can be pretty expensive, but it's worth it.

You can order absinthe online btw. Shipping is damn expensive though, so plan on buying high quality stuff to make up for it.

They sell Absinthe for about $20-$30 a bottle (multiple varieties) at my local cigarette and booze shop. They'll also special order if you want something specific.

Most of the absinthe that is sold in liquor stores in the states is a joke. Levels of wormwood (and thus the psychoactive chemicals from said wormwood) are limited. Absinthe bought from oversees, particularly Eastern Europe is the way to go. Although it is expensive, it can be worth it. The absinthe you buy from the liquor store around the corner is essentially just a bitter green liquor. Nothing to special about it.

I'll have to take a picture, but my in home bar has 1 bottle of:
Woodford Reserve
Jim Beam
Jack Daniels
Jameson special 12 reserve
Kahlua
Kahlua especial (just kahlua bumped up to 70 proof)
New Amsterdam gin
New Orleans Rum (actually a top shelf rum... delicious)
Sailor Jerry's
Hot Damn
Some cheap no name triple sec
Stoli vodka
1800 Tequila
Some cheap no name vermouth
Chambord

Whenever a bottle is about to run dry, we buy a new one. Sometimes there are other random bottles added. Always have High Life in the fridge and usually some other beer too.

Thujone, the psychoactive chemical in Absinthe, comes from the wormwood but wormwood is a bittering agent. I've made Absinthe with 8x the legal limit of Thujone and it's COMPLETELY undrinkable and gave me no real effects beyond wanting to cut my tongue out from the horrid taste.

In college, I only had one thing and it's all I drank. I don't recommend it. It was Bacardi 151. not mixed.

I keep High Life as the cheap always around beer.
Currently in the fridge:
McSorley's Irish Black Lager
Rouge Mocha Porter
Rouge Dead Guy Ale
Also, the live-in girlfriend drinks Rolling Rock so there is probably some of that in there.
And a bottle of Cuvee Van De Keizer Blauw 2011. I've never had the 2011, but the 2008, 09, and 10 are all amazing. Been saving it for a special occasion.

Also: Only legal absinthe to sell in the US is "thujone free". That is defined as less than 10ppm.
I, too, have had homemade absinthe, and it was terrible. I didn't make it myself, so I don't know what strength of thujone it was supposed to be. But it was terrible tasting and all I felt was a kind of drunk. Nothing psychoactive to speak of.

Rouge is for womenz faces. Rogue is a badass beer company.

The only reason I buy High Life is when I'm poor as F*CK and all I have to choose between is High Life and Natty Ice. I am not one to drink just to get drunk, I only drink because I enjoy the taste of well-made beers and a few hard liquors. I purchase cheaper beer only when someone else is drinking with me and they want to get drunk, or as filler for a social gathering but usually tend to also purchase something better.

@Apex, Bacardi 151 is one of my favorites and I like it straight but prefer it cut with Pepsi. If it's going to be a straight hard liquor it has to be Moonshine by the swig.

When I drink to get drunk, I have hard alcohol mixed drinks. My favorite is a jack and coke. When I drink a "lighter beer", I prefer blue moon.

Well I tend bar on occasion and that usually results in people coming to my house at night. I have stuff in the bar I don't even drink... like the 1800 and the rums. I drink mostly whiskey and gin.
