After having a nice long hour mind-breaking discussion about the future of the world and the reasoning behind animals going extinct and many other hot topics, I have decided to try to provoke an intelligent argument on the forums. Please actually think about this and not just throw some bullshit answer out. Im trying to get my mind blown. The question is:

Is it truly worth it to die for a family member or friend? Yes, you’d be a hero, but that person would feel guilty for your death for the rest of their lives. Is that “brave” act actually cowardly because you’re transferring the guilt that you’d have felt if you did nothing and watched them die to your friend, who has to deal with the guilt of causing your death?

Traditionally, when you save a person's life it makes you responsible for their well-being until the day you or they die. Having had to save a life more than once, I can attest to the bond that is created in such an event. In the case of a family member or close friend, the bond is already there as a matter of course unless there is a tacit understanding to the contrary within the relationship. As far as cowardice goes, that is more dependent upon circumstances and in whether or not letting the person die is a selfish thing (want their money, let them die or they're in serious pain and agony, let them die) and furthermore, there is no transferrence of such a quality of action in doing or not doing the deed except having chosen the more selfish route. In such as case, the cowardice remains.

2. You're assuming the feeling(s) of the person whose life was spared inherently assumes guilt for the death of said family or friend.

3. This is an insult to the English language:

On a side-note before I answer the question, it depends on the person and what I think they would want me to do. For example, my parents. I think they would rather die and have me save myself so I could have a full life. I would do the same for my kids, wife, whatever.

Either way, I wouldn't say sacrificing your life to let a loved-one continue living theirs is far from cowardly. Yes they have to carry that with them for the rest of their time, but they will forever respect whoever performed said selfless act and never forget that their life was saved by that particular someone.

On the other hand, if I specifically sacrificed myself to let someone else because "I can't live without that person and I might as well die and let them live", maybe that is selfish because they may feel the same way. It's a complicated question/discussion that is going to be mostly based on situation, conditions, and opinion...

Yes I believe it would be worth it. I would die for a lot of ppl in my family. I wouldn't do it to be a hero I just feel that it would be the right thing to do.

Actually, according to the field of Anthropology, which is my major, there is an actual way to determine if you would save a family member. The benefit of to kin is multiplied by your relatedness, and has to be greater than the cost to you. Theoretically and scientifically speaking, you would not give up your life for one brother, you would for 3 though. Because your relatedness to a sibling is .5, which is less than your own life. So Benefit of the kin multiplied by relatedness (.125 for cousin, .5 for sibling, .5 for parent/child etc.).
