Post Stephen King: The Tower Series
If any of you read through Lord of the Rings and enjoyed it thoroughly, and wished that there was more to the story -- I can promise that this series will deliver. The character development is unequaled, the story is a bit slow to start out with... especially in the first book. It picks up in the second book, the third book you'll probably be sitting there with a big "wtf?!" look on your face, craving more of the story... and the fourth book. Good god. The build up and tension is unfathomable. I couldn't put it down.

Have any of you read it? I'm just finishing the inner book of the fourth book, and I had to take a break. It was getting too intense.

Shelly is a fan, but I couldn't ever get into his writing.

It's a darn good series. If you enjoyed it, you should really read the series "A Song of Ice and Fire." If you like any type of Sci-fi or fantacy, the series is by far the best I've read. (and I read a shit ton)

EVERYTHING SERVES THE BEAM

@gman, I probably get into his writing mainly because he's from Maine and a lot of his writing is very 'Maine' related, and he almost always uses Maine and Maine-isms in his books. Also, he has a very big vocabulary of unusual euphemisms.

Great for the first 3 books. Tanked hard on the 4th.

Which, a song of ice and fire or the dark tower?

There's no way the Dark Tower series tanked after the 3rd book it just kept getting better and better.

I fought my way through the first book and about a third of the way into the second before I put it down. I can't get into it. :(

Which is a shame because it's my brother's favorite book series ever and he can't stop talking about how awesome it is.

Indeed. I reached maximum sadness in the fourth book. I've had my frown pants on all F*CKING day.

Raddue, first book sucks, second book is meh. Third book starts out slow, then shit starts to get really real, really fast. Fourth book... I had to stop reading because it got way to intense for me. Regardless, Stephen King now has me by the balls and I'm being dragged through the story whether I like it or not.

I've heard alot about this series, I will have to pick it up. However, I subscribe to the idea that the Dune novels are the quintessential sci-fi novels. After reading them all, I still want more and more.

I liked dune a lot, this is a completely different style of book I think. A bridge between science fiction, western, and full out fiction. The character development is unreal. It blows every book I've read out of the water, and I've read a good chunk.

If you do pick it up, just remember, the first sucks, and then it starts accelerating. It hasn't even started to level out, and I'm now more than halfway through. It is worth it. So many questions, emotions, possibilities.

You really think the character development is better than the Song of Ice and Fire series? I've been following that series since the first two books were out and I love them. Best series I've ever read.

I'll admit it struck a chord with me and resonated, however, I just handed the fourth book to my girlfriend with a little bit of back story and skipped her to the start of the inner book there, she's 30 pages in now and refusing to do anything but read it. She "Hates reading" and can't put it down and she's not even to the parts where things start getting crazy. Yes. I dare you to get to Lud in the third book and tell me you're not addicted.

I'm not going to drop spoilers in here, but I'm more than happy to try and clarify any questions you might have. You're welcome to PM me if you decide to take me up on it :).

Yeah, Wizard and Glass is where things really start to pick up. Also, the Dark Tower series is WAY WAY WAY better of a read if you've read the other books that Stephen King writes. He basically took scenarios, characters, back story and a lot of other things from pretty much every story he's ever written and kind-of developed a world where all of it ties together (40+ novels and god knows how many short stories) and culminates in the Dark Tower series, which itself took 30 years to write. So in-between books he was adding little details here and there and putting the bits and pieces into his stories and novels and when it came to write a new 'Tower' book, he has been able to flesh out all of these things into greater detail.

[edit:] Hot damn, a new Dark Tower novel is forthcoming! :D

Stephen King wrote:
Dear Constant Readers,

At some point, while worrying over the copyedited manuscript of the next book (11/22/63, out November 8th), I started thinking—and dreaming—about Mid-World again. The major story of Roland and his ka-tet was told, but I realized there was at least one hole in the narrative progression: what happened to Roland, Jake, Eddie, Susannah, and Oy between the time they leave the Emerald City (the end of Wizard and Glass) and the time we pick them up again, on the outskirts of Calla Bryn Sturgis (the beginning of Wolves of the Calla)?

There was a storm, I decided. One of sudden and vicious intensity. The kind to which billy-bumblers like Oy are particularly susceptible. Little by little, a story began to take shape. I saw a line of riders, one of them Roland’s old mate, Jamie DeCurry, emerging from clouds of alkali dust thrown by a high wind. I saw a severed head on a fencepost. I saw a swamp full of dangers and terrors. I saw just enough to want to see the rest. Long story short, I went back to visit an-tet with my friends for awhile. The result is a novel called The Wind Through the Keyhole. It’s finished, and I expect it will be published next year.

It won’t tell you much that’s new about Roland and his friends, but there’s a lot none of us knew about Mid-World, both past and present. The novel is shorter than DT 2-7, but quite a bit longer than the first volume—call this one DT-4.5. It’s not going to change anybody’s life, but God, I had fun.

I stopped reading in book 3 or 4 in 2006. Can't remember ... I read a lot...and have like king novels but this was slow and then just a little 2 much. I also gave up on the wheel of time series after book 11. Fire and Ice is good but George RR Martin is a lazy writer.

Im a huge King fan and the tower series is by far his best work.Ive read them all twice.Ive spent alot of time with Roland,Jake,Eddie,Susannah and Oy.Wizard and glass is my favorite,i love Cuttbert. When you get further along hit me up and we can talk about some of it ,i don't want to spoil anything for you.I can Guarantee you one thing before its all over the last ones will have you crying like a baby.

Ron Howard had signed on to do the movies due out next year but they got canceled,im kinda glad too. There is no way to make movies that would do the books justice.
That series had me so bad at one time that i contemplated getting a KA tattoo.I cant wait till Wind through the keyhole comes out.

The fourth one hit me hard. Really hard. I lost sleep the night after I finished it.

Every time I got a new Tower book, I literally stayed up until I couldn't stay awake, and basically read them all at a steady clip, probably finished the series outside of a week.
