So i just installed a new Drive to my PC, Its a 64 GB SSD drive by Kingston. I installed windows 7 on it and boot times are almost instantaneous. I am formatting the old drive and plan on using it for mass storage so I still need to reinstall CSS and other necessities. Windows installed in less than half an hour, and boot times appear to be less than 5 seconds, but i haven't done a cold boot yet. Will let you know when that changes.

For now i'm backing up my external on to my old drive because apparently it was still formatted in FAT32, once it is in NTFS and the internal is blank I will get onto installing CSS.

All SSD drives are good for is boot, and random reads. Extended reads (games,movies) it will be equal to / slower than a 10krpm HDD, with less storage and a much higher price.

But yeh. They're quick for boots. I'm looking into getting one for my next laptop so I can use it in class without sitting around for 5 minutes.

I have a 256gig SSD that I havent installed yet. I dont have windows so Im waiting to install it. and I dont know if I should put it in my pc or my laptop.

I just did a metric shit ton of research into SSDs for my new build. What kind of chipset/mobo do you have? I might have some recommendations on settings :P

Also, agreeing with hooker: media files are best kept on HDD.
Also, disagreeing with hooker: games on SSD do prove to have better perf, a paper shows in one game it hit 33% better perf and in a benchmark it hit 58% better. I think it did 7200 though, not 10k.

I don't need better performance for video games. I bought it because my HDD has a bunch of bad sectors, so I want OS to have zero down time when it finally crashes. I plan on using it until it dies for media, games and other programs, considering that it is quite small. I might leave the things i use most on it, like firefox, steam(css) and recent downloads until I feel like moving them(cause the write speeds are ridiculous) .

I moved my steam install to a slave drive so I don't have to reinstall/download every time I format. I reload windows every six months or so. It gets to be a pain in the ass having to reinstall all of the shit that I want to have, i.e. utils, directory setup, files, etc. I really need to write some scripts that will do all of that for me... Virtually everything I want to always have lives on my slave drive. It's just a 650GB 7200rpm. I make sure to have an image of both drives every month or two.

The setup I plan to have eventually is a SSD for OS and two 10k rpm raptors in RAID0 for steam and media.

Question: I have rarely done images of data primarily because I never felt like using 2532 DVD-Rs to make one image. What do you use to image 650 gigs of data or thereabouts?

My SSD failed in like 4 months from loading "too much" onto it. Don't tell me to use it just for boot up, cause that is an even bigger waste of money. For $100+ I'll spare the extra couple minutes to boot up. They are imperfect, expensive bullshit. Stick with fast HDDs.
