You say "your" a lot in the rest of the post -- do you understand it. Regardless, in general, socialistic programs, while appearing to help the economy in the short term, don't help the economy in the long term. You might say FDR'd new deal was totally socialist and it got us out of the worst economic disaster of all time, the great depression -- but many economists disagree with that and say that these policies in fact delayed economic recovery. What is clear is that the ultimate fate of these policies will never be known because the country was industrialized by WWII -- greatly increasing economic output and prosperity.

I might be giving you a little too much credit to be able to relate the current scenario with anything in history though...


Where should it be? Should it be one of the European countries who refuses to take a hard stand against anyone and plays moderate while the US does the dirty work? The US has the best system of higher education. The US has one of the best (some, including myself, would say the best) and most technologically advanced and capable military. The US is a leader (or possibly soon-to-be former leader) of individual rights and in consistently ranked in the highest tier for amount of freedom provided.


This survey you mention ranks health systems. The US placed lower not because of quality of care, nor responsiveness but because of cost per capita. Interestingly, the point seems moot since the US places behind only 7 countries in terms of GDP per capital (3 of which are middle eastern countries that have fortunes from oil exports). The takeaway here is that while our healthcare system may be inefficient, it is unmistakeably top notch and hell, we can afford it.


Talk about deceiving. In this ranking, the more infant deaths, the lower the number, so a rank if 180 means there are only 44 countries with lower percentage of infant deaths and those are only fractions (of fractions better). With a median mortality rate above 18, the US's rate of 6.3 isn't that far behind #1 Singapore's 2.3 -- and again, we're talking less than 1% of infants who are born.


The auto industry did crash -- but not because America sucks or Bush was the devil but because they refused to innovate. The labor unions were charging them out of business. (Don't flame me about unions, they have their place and I agree that they are important) The genius part of a capitalistic system would be that other companies would have come in and filled the void -- perhaps US Based electric car company Tesla Motors. Instead, the auto companies / banks have been bailed out with my money and now are declaring RECORD PROFITS! Funny thing is, even though we had no choice to bail them out with our taxes, no one who helped to bail out these banks will be seeing any of that profit...
