 Texas Gun Advice
http://digg.com/world_news/College_Student_Shoots_Kills_Home_Invader <-- got me thinking seriously...
I've read all the posts in chowmein's new gun thread, and was wondering if anyone had any advice or info on how to legally obtain a pistol for personal defence in Texas, and what is sufficient in terms of stopping power, liscences (which ones and where to get), etc..
21 in Austin if it makes a difference..

This is one thing that i wouldn't google. We have a lot of gun freaks in here and they will lead you in the right directions. If not just go shot them in the leg to teach them a lesson.

It was probably one of the worst $209 investments I've ever made. I find it is extremely hard to play video games with a giant dick in your ass.

How old are you? Are you looking for a gun for home defense or everyday carry? In texas all you need todo is get a CHL.

As long as you're not a felon, not someone who owes child support, not someone who has been deemed a "nut" in the state of Texas, a US citizen and not a fugitive running from the law, you can own a gun up to a .50 caliber. Plus, you have to have the cash to buy one, and, if you have children, be able to lock it up away from them. It's a felony to own a gun in the State of Texas if you have a child in the house and the gun isn't locked up.
CHL is a different story, you have to go to a class and pass with a 70% or above.
If you're going to buy a weapon for personal defense, I wouldn't buy one less than a .45 caliber. The .45 will stop anyone in their tracks, no matter where you hit them. If you're cheap, get a Hi Point, you can get a 10 clip semi auto for under $200 easy.

obtaining handguns is easy as long as you aren't a convicted felon. as stated in the other thread, go .380 or larger. if price is an issue, drop in on local pawn shops and/or any local gun shows.

For home I recommend a shotgun. A good quality shotgun that isnt all that expensive is a Remington 870 Express Magnum. I have one and it costs me in Miami(everything is expensive as F*CK) $389.99. My 870 - Remington Official Website I've read shotguns to perfect for home defense for many reasons. One of the reasons is the sound alone of charging a shotgun is supposedly enough to scare most common thieves away. Another one is the fact that most in home gun battle are close the shotgun does not require you to be 99.99% accurate, you can generally point in the direction and fire. [Doesn't mean you can go all cowboy and shoot from the waste that really fucks up accuracy.] Most people complain about shotguns recoil but it isnt bad if you learn to shoot it correctly. This is a personal video a friend of mine took out when we went shooting @ the range. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37UC6HpqeD0
As for concealed carry pistols work best. I believe in only carrying .45ACP just because I want that AFRICAN AMERICAN to go down and stay down. 2 to the body and 1 to the head. But for most people to carry 9mm-.45ACP is a good deal.

Dont EVER by a Highpoint that gun is the biggest piece of shit ever. I bought a 9mm for 150 because it was cheap brought it to the range didnt get 10 rounds threw and that thing jammed. For home defense I say .40 or higher you can get a sig or a glock. Glock being one of my fav gun because its reliable as hell.

I got a home defense gun a few years back. I almost went with a shotty too, but I have small hallways in my apartment. I ended up with an FN Hi Power SFS pistol in .40 S&W for a liquidation price (buddy is a licensed arms dealer - www.onpointfirearms.com)
Just waited a couple of days and it was mine. Unless TX has something crazy that FL doesn't, you shouldn't have any problems getting something.

I think the high point or hi point or however you spell it is a good deal if you aren't going to run thousands of rounds through it. My buddy just bought one, he's already put 300 rounds through it without any problems.
He only got one because he's a welder and it's tough to find a welding job when the oil is down like it is: in other words, he's half broke, heh.
So...I think it'd be ok if you don't have 600+ bones to spend on a quality brand name pistol.

Here's another train of thought, move to Canada and you won't need a gun. The suberbs are especially nice here.

Unfortunately, the cost of having your head firmly lodged up your ass outweighs any benefits of Canada.
