 Free Speech
[edited by CorpseHumper]
Sorry, but you're not allowed free speech here.

It's clearly a violation of free speech. The question is instead whether or not schools should be allowed to limit free speech of students (and I suppose faculty) and to what extent.
It's hard to draw the line...for example, I think it would have been appropriate if the sign had been something that incited violence against another group of students. However, I think this sign was just stupid, and really doubt that anyone started smoking pot just because they saw it. Because of that I don't think the principal should have made such a big deal about it.
That's especially true because they were outside the classroom, just on a "school-sponsored event", or a field trip. If something like that happened while at school, I'd be more likely to side with the administration, because it would be a distraction from the learning environment.

Yeah, I agree Judicator. I think that this whole situation was blown way out of proportion. I'm not sure if that incident earned Supreme Court attention. What about the limiation of expression in essays? I find myself thinking about this Lord of the Flies essay that I read recently. In general, should faculty be able to fail a student for what he or she expresses? I am not sure where to draw the line. On one hand the teachers have a responsiblity to maintain a learning environment but on the other hand the student should have the right to his or her own opinion.

People need limits.
Once, I saw people protesting abortion by putting up huge pictures of butchered pre-birth babies along the street lights. I don't need to see that, and I don't need my kids to see that. What about MY rights?
Why do I have to be insulted by some STONED kid holding a sign that says "BONG HITS 4 JESUS" just be cause he wants to be shocking? (yes, he has priors for distribution, it's not just an innocent demonstration)
Does free speech mean I have the right to say anything I want to anyone I want? No. Guess what... walk up to a minority and insult them, then see how long it takes for your freedom of speech to turn into a full-blown LIABILITY suit.
It's only when it hurts whites or christians that it's defended as "freedom of speech".
Don't just listen to what you're told. Read between the lines.

it's something to think about. i think you're very true about the part concerning the right to not be exempt from others practicing free speech. i think society has had a difficult time setting boundaries; afraid of infringing personal liberties at the cost of society. interesting...

"Free Speech" is what people use to get away with things they know is not right. I can't stand when someone uses that freakin' cop-out to get away with things....especially the media! "Hey....I can tell the world where this regiment of soldiers are! It's my right to free speech!" F*ck that.....get rid of it, I say.

.
Here in Michigan we have the Dream Cruise. The Dream Cruise is a te biggest automobile event in the world. People cruise their classic and custom cars on a 50 mile stretch of road. Every year this sick bastard drives the abortion van. ITs a huge panal truck with pictures of nasty abortion pictures that no one, let alone children should see. I love gory movies and stuff but thats just sick.

all of your rights stop where mine begin.
such your right to free speach ends when it starts harrasing me, or is slander.
the thing with this i dont agree with is if i did my research right, the kid skipped school, so he wasn't under the schools juristriction and all that "parent" shit since he never showed up on campus. he went to this vent seperate from the school, so i dont think the school should be able to punsh him. if thats the case whey dont they just start suspending people for breaking school policy outside of school.
also the way the system is set up is that students have limited speech, however the school can pretty much say whatever you say isnt protected if they dont like it, or it goes against them, (so you have your "free speech" as long as it supports them)
meh

Two students at my high school a couple years ago arranged a fight off campus after school. The principal found out after the fact and suspended both of them.

yeah, there is this gay bar in Orlando called the Parliament House.
And, some church organization put a billboard across the street with a picture of some guys and girls on it, from all races.....stating " We Questioned homosexuality."
It was a big issue here in Orlando because they fought about it and had to move the billboard a little futher down the street.
I LOL'ED!
I drive past it every day and laugh.

Wait, is this about those kids rallying in front of (where was it, the White House?) or something about free speech?
I saw something vaguely familiar in the paper yesterday while at work.
(And it reminds me, my girlfriend's mom was on CNN a week ago because she was in a peace rally in front of the white house. xD)

Pants?
You have the right to free speech, until it violates another's rights. That's the limit. People are just very dodgy and irresponsible when it comes to acknowledging when they've crossed those bounds.
