Death Note above all right now. Subbed by Toriyama World. Does it get better after the first episode? It almost killed me watching that, so little action. I have a short attention span and need stimulation in great Oh look a kitty!
I roffle'd.

Death Note is a intellectual game of wits between two people, Yagami Light and L. Yes, the story does progress more and gets more action, but it's not your typical run around shoot em up anime. Rather, it's the shock value you get from the turn of events that happen.
If you're one to have ADD, don't watch it then. But if you're really striving for a more intellectual and really story deep anime rather than the stupid fanboy DBZ anime, then check it out.

I'll bet you're a "Serial Experiments: Lain" fan.
I also want to say I'm not a DBZ fan. I like adult action and horror anime (not hentai). I also don't mind a giant robot anime if the story is done well and isn't too childish. I'll admit, Death Note is getting rave reviews and the manga is huge right now.
Others I'd like to suggest are the older Hayao Miyazaki flicks. Most people are familiar with Mononoke and Spirted away, but check out Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds, Kiki's Delivery Service, and if you didn't see Howl's Moving Castle yet, then you're missing out on some of the greatest animation ever. Word was that he was going to quit after Howl's, but IMDB says he's doing another feature.
I also don't think I've seen anyone mention Escaflowne? Great series out on DVD.
Record of Lodoss War is great, also on DVD.
Macross Plus was ahead of it's time.
Grave of the Fireflies might make you cry.
Both Vampire Hunter D movies are awesome.
I'll think of more I'm sure.

Pokémon was pretty schweet when it first came out. Then Digimon came out and was like "Digimon, digital monsters digimon will suck your balls" It was gay. SupercalifragilisticwerewolfgururururcactuarobiwankinobihebrewbuttbuddyMon.
