well, computers are hard for me to troubleshoot
without actually seeing and hearing whats going on.
I'f you or your roommate tried to upgrade the card, or took the new video card out of it...it's probably a driver issue.
sometimes when you install a new video card and load new drivers....it's still looking for the new card if you didn't uninstall the drivers before removing it.
also, it could be that on the bios....the onboard VGA
was disabled to allow the other card to play.
usually pressing the delete key while the computer is booting up allows you to enter the bios.
try that.....but if it doesnt work try pressing the F8 key as the system is starting up...and go into safe mode.
this will load a minimum set of drivers, and actually display the video so you can uninstall other drivers that might be causing it not to display.
Have you tried connecting a different monitor and restarting everything from a cold state? Maybe it's the monitor that's fried.
If that doesn't work, see if someone will lend you a video card to test with and see if you can get video from it.
If it's a "all-in-one" HP unit that has integrated EVERYTHING... you might have to see if you can get that new comp a little earlier than December.... you may be dead in the water, bro.
