I wasn't allowed to have the internet while I lived with my mother. I moved in with my father when I was 17 and started my proper nerdness then. My mother's excuse was "Only faggots and child molesters hang out on the internet"

She has recently asked me to help her computer shop and set up the net for her. I told her no. Sometimes parents go out of their way to prove they have no idea what they are doing.

That's a rough situation. I had aol once upon a time and I don't think I could go back. Today aol actually called me. It was ?possibly? an outsourced call center due to the fact it took 5 min for me to understand who the hell it was. Then they asked if I had ever recived a free aol disc, I simply replied "Everyone one in the free world has one of those costers." and they hung up on me. How rude can you get.
Your parents don't want you to spend so much time on the computer because they want to have grandchildren one day.

My dad's excuse is...My heart is going to go out when im 25, but yet i work out everyday, I HAD a job at one point but now I have to focus more on school, and plus, there isnt SHIT to do where I live except smoke weed and get drunk, and when I did start particpating again, he found weed in my jacket so now I get a piss test on the 9th of jan or I get my license and computer taken away, but I'll pass so it's all good.

Yeah I had AOL until a year ago...well, for 3 years I was on aol dial-up 14.4k, then I bought a 56k modem (mega-upgrade, I know) and was on that for a year...with only one phone line at home so I could never use it, and then I persuaded my parents to try SBC Yahoo! DSL one year free type deal, banking on the fact that they wouldn't be able to go back to aol dial-up.

And it comes with parental controls, but you can create a free yahoo e-mail account and signing on with that bypasses them.

I recommend you try that, saying it's just free for a year, nothing to lose, and it has parental controls.
