Re: A friend's opinion on the Flu Shot
If i remember correctly, flu vaccinations contain weakened strains of the flu virus. If your immune system is weakened from stress or perhaps the onset of other illnesses, you can very well catch the flu from the vaccine.
My next door neighbor died after she caught the flu from a vaccine, she was in her 80's though. (Happens all the time in Florida with the elderly there.) :(

I don't know about the government population control conspiracy theory, but I'm not a fan of these types of vaccinations. If people actually ate healthy and/or took vitamin supplements, especially vitamin C, their immune systems would already be built up to fend off the cold and flu. This type of thing is making us weaker as a society.
During the cold and flu season I start taking vitamin C regularly. IF I actually do get sick it is far less severe and shorter lived than what most people go through. Take care of yourselves!

I know it's kind of beat into our society that vitamin C prevents colds and whatnot, but there is actually no REAL evidence that vitamin C boosts our immune system. On paper, it should do something along those lines in large doses, but as of today there's no conclusive data. I still eat vitamin C tablets though cause they taste awesome!

Yah I could eat a whole jar of Vit c tabs. I even did when I was a kid. Had to have my stomach pumped. The urban myth that you can have as much vitamin c as you want and just pee out the extra? Yeah, it's a myth.

Re: A friend's opinion on the Flu Shot
I'm kinda like luff/tazz, I just don't get sick. Cept I'm not fat and don't die once a year. (every few years, only been sick once the past 7, and that lasted 2 days) On the topic of vitamin C, I've had some everyday.
As far as the government conspircy theory: I don't believe it, and I think you might have to be crazy to!

I still eat vitamin C tablets though cause they taste awesome! not so sure about the inconclusive research/evidence... just google "vitamin c immune booster". here's one to start. http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/t042500.asp. Vitamin C tops the list of immune boosters for many reasons. There has been more research about the immune-boosting effects of Vitamin C than perhaps any other nutrient. Vitamin C supplements are inexpensive to produce, and it's available naturally in many fruits and vegetables. Also, you can buy a vitamin-C-fortified version of just about anything. Here's what the research shows about how this mighty vitamin protects your body.
Vitamin C increases the production of infection-fighting white blood cells and antibodies and increases levels of interferon, the antibody that coats cell surfaces, preventing the entry of viruses. Vitamin C reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by raising levels of HDL (good) cholesterol while lowering blood pressure and interfering with the process by which fat is converted to plaque in the arteries. As an added perk, persons whose diets are higher in vitamin C have lower rates of colon, prostate, and breast cancer.
You don't have to take in massive amounts of vitamin C to boost your immune system. Around 200 milligrams a day seems to be a generally agreed-upon amount and one that can be automatically obtained by eating at least six servings of fruits and vegetables a day. See Top Seven Vitamin C-Containing Fruits. If you take vitamin C supplements, it's best to space them throughout the day rather than take one large dose, most of which may end up being excreted in the urine.

Re: A friend's opinion on the Flu Shot
Its a myth because no one has a clue how it works in full, at best they're guessing at this point in time. If Vitamin C boosted immunuological response and helped fend of germs high doses would decrease sickness time, but conclusively its never been shown to be that way, in fact high doses are detremental adn they can't figure out why. Its one of the major points of understanding research in full ratehr than the normal way that the US and Canadian MEdia portrays it by just typing out "conclusive" results that aren't actually conclusive.. hence why Google results/wikipedia are highly frowned upon by scholars.
So yes, vitamin C has benefits, but they're not fully understood, and Yes its a myth that it helps fend off germs. Love science for the way it is.
also if you eat right you shouldnt need supplements, just tossing it out there. Supplements added onto an already healthy diet don't actually have any amazing effects as people say.

Re: A friend's opinion on the Flu Shot
Radiation and chemo are treatments for types of illness / conditions and they are highly toxic / dangerous in high or prolonged doses, and they are used regularly. So are tylenol and advil. Too much of anything is bad for you; I have yet to find any exception to that.
Do you ever stop to think the reason tests and studies are inconclusive despite the millions of people who get benefits from vitamin c is because the medical and pharmaceutical industries can't make huge profits from it? Hence the flu shot. "OMG SWINE FLU!!! Buy our shot now to protect yourself." It's all about consumer perception. If you keep telling them natural remedies don't work they will buy your proprietary ones, and you will make tons of money.
