Here there is no one in your position. If you're in management, there is not a union that would accept you. We are unionized because for many years people took lots of flack from the company. It's not that we don't enjoy our jobs, we just got tired of getting screwed over. Not all positions are union, but I wouldn't work in one of those positions EVER. Minimum wage to stand outside in FL heat all summer long, then when you're due for a raise they dump you for no reason at all. Screw that! I.A.T.S.E. has covered my back a few times when I was getting screwed over. My latest one was the company "forgot" that I was due overtime and double time from every paycheck over the past 3 months. I called to have it fixed and was told that there was nothing the company do. So I talked to my Shop Steward and the problem was solved. If I had been in a non-union position, all of that money that I was due, I would never have seen a penny of.

And Gr33n works as a Stage Technician, not a performer. We suffer as much heat damage as firefighters and military, they've done studies on us. Yeah, I guess it would be like being in the desert in all your gear...20-80 lbs of costume for a long time in the heat, or doing aerobic activity in a parade...you turn beet red and if it goes on long enough, heat exhaustion, chills, the works. We sweat more than you would think possible! haha...

Well, I wish my shop stewards worked harder, and knew the contract (I certainly do) better, but they have helped me out a lot. I lost my job twice, and twice got it back with back pay and seniority intact. Second time it was an ILLEGAL firing, so I could have sued them, but I needed the job more. It's true about the union and the company being at odds, that's why I'm NOT a steward as I get along great with most of my managers (there are a TON) and it would instantly make me the enemy, not something right now you want to be if you want to keep from being subtly harassed. Or even fired for dumb stuff. Sure, your job is restored, but it means out of work for a month and that saves the company $$$. Good luck with the bitching!
