The logical progression would obviously go, Stone age, Bronze age, Iorn age, Age of invention (Agricutural age), Industrial revolution age, Technology age, Information age, and Space age.

An alternative view is as follows:

The Golden Age

According to Hesiod, this was the age when Cronus was in power. It was an age of perfection, of innocence and happiness, in which truth and justice prevailed, not through, force, or power, but through man’s natural goodness. Labour was not necessary, because the earth freely gave its wealth and riches without labour; warlike instruments did not exist, because peace was in the hearts of men. It was always spring – the only season – and men were always young; fruit and flowers bloomed without being planted, and milk and wine came from the rivers, the honey flowed from the oak. Death, when it came, was a pleasant sleep, and men were transformed in to good spirits or demons, and were then appointed to watch over men on earth and to guard and guide them.

The Silver Age

An age, despite its name, of suffering hardship, and decay. Zeus introduced the seasons of the year, which meant the displeasure and discomfort of summer heat and winter cold, and he reduced the spring. Houses – not necessary in the golden age had to be built, and labour became necessary for man and animal because nature no longer gave its treasures for the asking. The silver age men were strong and powerful, but they were impious, defiant, and mentally weak. When they died, they lived under the earth as spirits, but Zeus did not confer on them immortality, which was one of the gifts of the age of gold.

The Brazen Age

The work of Zeus, when all things were made of brass (or bronze), was a period of war, violence, savagery, and strife, in which strong men – stronger than those in the silver age – destroyed each other. In this era, when men died, they stayed dead.

The Heroic Age

The age of demi-gods and heroes. Superior to both the silver and the brazen ages, it is the period associated with the Theban and Trojan Wars.

The Iron Age

The last age and the worst. This followed the heroic age, which is suspiciously modern in its resemblance to later and present-day society. It was not merely a period of struggle and hard labour, but of labour degraded into toil. Crime was common, and all the qualities that we hold up as ideals, truth, modesty, virtue, honour, decency – were stifled. Day and night were made miserable by care and worry. Mean and selfish purposes dominated men, who used the earth’s wealth in mean and selfish ways. The qualities that we are supposed to be ashamed of were the ones that were uppermost: fraud, deceit, violence, and hatred. The world was red with blood, and civil and foreign wars were as common as crime. With the world in such a state, one can hardly blame Zeus for his descision to drown the world and its inhabitants – only the fear of setting heaven itself ablaze kept him from starting a fire – and to create a new world and race.

As H. C. Baldry has remarked, Hesiod (c. 750 BC), who is the first extant source for this myth, referred to "Races", not to "Ages". It was posterity that introduced the latter term. Yet this modification did not alter the core of the idea: different Races lived in succeeding times, each reflecting a certain Zeitgeist, which is the bringer or bearer of their customs and spiritual qualities.

The Ages (or Races) are mainly defined by moral or spiritual qualities which are seen as degenerating in the course of time. Thus the first age (the Golden) is an era of peace, justice, simplicity, and happiness. But the succeeding Races, being spiritually inferior, cause both the world and the life of man to increasingly fall under the rule of hate, greed, war, and injustice. In this context, material progress—for example, the conquests of navigation—is not counted as an improvement, but rather as a symptom, if not a cause, of decline.

Accordingly, the sequence Gold–Silver–Bronze–Iron illustrates a process of decay in the course of which evil replaces good in all manifestations: peace turns into war, piety into impiety, justice into injustice, simplicity into greed, and spirituality into materiality. The history of man is thus seen as a process, not of improvement and progress, but of decadence and fall, which, however, might not be definitive: a new cycle is sometimes expected to begin after the end of the last age.

Durango has attempted to summarize Hesiod's Works and Days which was written in the days of the Greeks specifically when they were experiencing an agrarian crisis. His work stressed the importance of manual labor and warned of the decadence of idleness, the immorality of his day (particularly unjust judges), and usury. To put this post in the proper perspective, Hesiod believed that he lived in the Iron Age and we too live in the Iron Age.


On a close tangent Hesiod's explanation of the Ages (Races) of Man is very similar to some ancient native american beliefs about the cycles of mankind. Where some native american cultures such as the Aztecs believe we live in the 5th world, the Hopi and the Maya believe that we live in the 4th world, a world where man is in decline and not in tune with nature. The 5th world is approaching quickly according to the Mayan calendar it will begin around 12/21/2012 and the Hopi believe that the return of our brothers from among the stars will usher in the 5th world. The Hopi believe that we live a two-hearted existence in the 4th world where we only think with our heads and not our hearts. In order to survive and truly enter the 5th world, a 'golden age of man', we must think and live with one heart, both our heads and hearts, and become in-sync with nature once more. If we don't change our ways we will continue on with our own destruction.

Some parallels that can be drawn between Hesiod and native american myths are that they both believe that at one time man lived in a golden age and since then we have followed a road of self-destruction. Also, each world has been destroyed violently and quickly. There are other myths from cultures all over the world which also speak of eras of mankind which have ended abruptly and violently. Where Hesiod's vision of mankind is rather bleak, native american myths show a glimmer of hope for mankind.
