Ok I have been looking at getting a pickup truck for the last little while but I need some advice on fuel mileage. If anyone has a fairly new truck (I'm looking at a 2004 F-150) how is the fuel mileage? Are the trucks really as bad as people make them out to be? The thought of a 100+ litre gas tank with todays gas prices worries me so I need some advice.


Ooops forgot that I live in Canada and we use metric, so 100 Litres is about 26.5 gallons.

Unless you go with a foriegn made truck, you're going to get shit mileage. Anywhere from 9-15 mpg. I have a 2008 Dodge 1500 and it gets 12 mpg, solid. You can increase your mpg with some upgrades, but you gotta weigh out if the cost is worth it to you.

Edit: By upgrades, I mean air intake, better exhaust (dual exhaust to decrease the pressure resistance) better spark plugs and make sure your tires are equal.

Keep your truck light: Don't haul a lot of shit around in the back all the time. My brother does that, it drives me wanky. Wait, did I just F*CKING say wanky?

Do you ever drive around witht he tank full? My buddy drives a full size and says driving with a half tank saves you mileage.

With a 20gal tank, a half tank only drops the overall weight by 60-70lbs.

That will improve your mileage, but not any more than not riding with fat chicks. A no-fat-chick policy is a more economical one.

One thing you're going to have to think about is winter driving. You're going to have to drop 500lbs in the back to keep her from sliding. That's when gas killed me when I had my F-150.

Was doing the math and the truck at a half tank will get 75 kms less then a full tank on the car I was looking at. For comfort and personnal enjoyment the truck is winning the contest. I'll have to put up pics if I buy the truck, going to go test drive it tomorrow. It's a 2004 F-150 FX4 Flareside, charcoal gray exterior with black leather interior.

Must remember no fat chicks, but what if they have really big hooters?

A buddy of mine says if you put the 4x4 on in the snow it helps if you haven't put any weight in the back, have you had any experience with that? I'm lucky though, my work is only a 5 minute drive and I practically never drive on the highway so I've dodged some big fuel costs there.

My buddy is determined to get 20 on his Silverado, his main goal is to switch a chip on it to some hybrid tech whatever, than after that a cold air intake and a bed cover.

4wheel drive helps in snow because instead of the rear wheelsdriving you the fronts pull as well, making steering easier, however, this only works well if you have street tires on that bitch, also make sure you check the passenger floorboard( righ up under the dash) ive seen alot of tese trucks getting new heater cores this fall, and its expensive.

tazz: hypertech chips are awesome for cont4rolling temp, but he wont feel a $300 diff in performance.. maybe 3-4 mpg, but that usually gets eaten up in looking for the "extra" power the chip advertises.

Yeah but every mile save counts when your in college, he figures he'll fundamentally have it payed for after so many fill up of gas. I think there are different chips to not just for power but for fuel economy from what him and his mate looked at in the local dealership.

I have a 2004 Silverado with the 5.3L V8. I get an average of 15 mpg. I usually fill up around a quarter tank and spend about $55-$65 every week to week in a half. It hurts sometimes, but i love it.

I do not see how you F*CKERS survive using a truck wit h this economy.
I spit out $25 dollars for my 97 Honda accord every week. Seems way more simply than spending all that cash just to have a truck because my dick is to small. :p jk, but i couldn't afford a truck with this prices

Toyota for the win i have 95 Tacoma 4x4 v6. it gets about 16-17 with a little lift and bigger tires. it has 250000 miles and never have had to take it to the shop just change the oil this bitch is gonna last me till 50000 miles i swear

Buy a Toyota Tacoma its a solid truck and is good on gas.

I need my truck. I think it just depends on what you use it for. I live in San Diego and am really big into the desert. I use it to tow a trailer with quads and dirtbiks out there. Can't do what with a little economic car lol.

I feel so comfortable in a truck, I don't know why but I have always loved them. I also have a big penis so I don't know what you are talking about there, it's the assholes who own BMW's and Mercede's that have little dicks and no idea on how to drive.

I change my oil every 2500 miles, no more. I also only use Castrol as this is the oil that has been used in the truck since it was born.


I don't add weight in the winter because I have been driving in the snow so long that I can about handle anything. I enjoy fish tailing down the road. I have 4 wheel drive but rarely use it. I used it twice last year, once during a bad 24" snowfall and once in the middle of a swamped out corn field. Keep the weight out and save on the gas. Keep your tires up to par and you will save gas. Under inflated is going to eat your gas, don't know about over inflation though. I keep em at 35 PSI and I check them at least once a week.

I drive professionally in Canada and the company I work for drives in any weather condition so trust me when I say I know how to drive in ANY weather condition. Thankyou guys for the information, I have basically decided to go test drive both the truck and and the car and see which I prefer and then buy the one I like the most. I will definiately post pics of which I buy and for fun what I got rid of.
