I've been wet shaving for the last 3 years. Its hands down the best shit

Does it take much longer than normal razor blades once you get the hang of it?

I honestly wish I got into it sooner. I happened upon a 50ish year old straight razor in NOS condition and that catapulted me into Reddit's wicked_edge sub. I ended up buying a brush, strop, alum and some proraso red to start with. Never looked back. Now I have that slightly larger collection you see in the pic. I'm strictly using a double edge currently since its easier to work around a beard with. What kind of soaps and other stuff do you use?




The hardest part is learning to make a really good lather, depending on if you're using a puck of soap, an Italian soft soap or cream. After that, is just a matter of prepping the face and blade angle (assuming you're using a double edge). If you're using a straight, the hardest part will be maintaining the blade bevel indefinitely. That'll take good stropping each time before you shave (challenging) and honing on a whet stone every few months (expensive and more challenging) but it's really worth it. If you invest in gear wisely and don't get gear acquisition syndrome, it'll save you money in the long run.

I just got a $20 DE razor from Feather and a pack of sample blades for the past few months. I have a pretty old aerosol shaving can and some other brand of shaving cream that i'll use after. Will most likely upgrade to a Merkur 34C once I find my "perfect" blade. Feather blades are definitely unnecessary for me as I got a fairly baby face, so as long as it's not dull it'll usually work.

The feather de is probably a pretty mild razor, if I remember correctly. A feather blade makes up for that mildness with its sharpness. That's good, usually. Merkur is an awesome brand which makes excellent razors. I own a 23c myself. It's also mild, so I'm considering getting a slant de.

As for the fact you're using canned foam, I'll quote a very influential figure in the wet shaving community:

"First in urgency is to get a brush and a shaving soap. Take a look at [Barrister and Mann, Stirling, Mickey Lee soap works and Tiki Bar soap, all] of which have a good selection of artisanal soaps. A true lather will make an immediate improvement in your shaves. "True lather" is what I call a lather made with a shaving brush from shaving soap or shaving cream and water.
Worst: cartridge razor + canned foam
Better: DE razor + canned foam
Better yet: cartridge razor + true lather
Best: DE razor + true lather"

Might give it a shot in fall (when I'll be back from my military contract), I'll have a lot more time on my hand
