Steam Trading Cards
Been collecting these things and getting a few coupons out of this... if nobody is really interested in trying to collect them I wouldn't mind taking some cards off of people... or any kinds of trades I'm open for... if I have duplicates

Re: Steam Trading Cards
You craft badges when you get a full set, which levels up your steam profile, gives you an emoticon to use in steam chat, and usually a background related to that game to customize your profile with. There's also a chance of generating a booster pack of cards for the game when you craft a badge (Chance dependent on how many people on steam have crafted a badge for that game), and a small chance of generating a limited-time coupon for a game on steam, which (I think) the chance going up as your steam level does too. It's explained in better detail here: http://steamcommunity.com/tradingcards/faq

Re: Steam Trading Cards
You get the cards just by being in the game. You can even just idle on the menu (I've done that for a few games I've beaten, and you can do it with multiple games open). You max out at some amount (half the number of available cards, usually 3 or 4) per game, and after that you either have to trade for them, or get boosters. The deal with boosters is apparently as more people craft the badges from getting cards, boosters are randomly distributed to people who have reached the max number of drops for that game. I signed on to steam one morning and randomly had a portal 2 booster with no action on my part, except having previously maxed out the 3-card drop limit for portal. Boosters aren't guaranteed to get you new cards, I ended up with a couple duplicates instead. :(
The FAQ explains it a lot more coherently than I could, you can see information about how many card drops you have and all that by going to your badges page in steam.
