 Wwoofing
*thanks reezy, heard it wrong.. Damn frenchies, can't even understand them when they speak in french.*
Anyone knows anything about roofing?
Not talking about building your home, but I know there's a website where people place ads to give you a bedroom and feed you for free, and you work for them (usually farms) in return. A bit like couch surfing, but you have to work instead of just crashing at their place for a few nights.
It's called roofing, but all I can find is some F*CKING websites about companies that actually build roofs, which is totally not what I'm looking for.
Anyone got any idea? I really want to find out more about this, sounds like a good way to travel cheap and meet people!

I think you misheard Roofing for wwoofing. http://www.wwoofinternational.org/http://www.wwoofusa.org/Most countries sponsor their own website ( http://www.wwoofjapan.com/main/), and a majority of them make you pay around 50 dollars to be able to see a map of the host farms in their country that you can get in contact with-- Its like a subscription kind of. Some countries let you browse for free. You work around 5 hours a day depending on the host and earn an allowance of sorts.

 Re: Roofing
Dude, thank you so much!
I didn't really mishear it. Met 2 girls from France yesterday who were telling me about "roofing" or "wwoofing", but you know, their french accent is way worse than mine. Way worse.
But you know, language barrier.

Just sayin' To be really honest (and I think you're kind of joking as well), you could get hit/beaten/raped/butchered just by walking down the streets near your hotel or house pretty much anywhere anyway. There is some risk, but I highly doubt there is any risk if you're smart enough to pick the places with good feedback, and places where you don't farm cocaine. For example, if Ginzu was hosting people, I would actually be afraid to be butchered.

 Re: Roofing
I'm actually a lot more into going out like in Chile, New-Zealand, Norway or Switzerland. Not sure yet, but that would be probably for christmas, or around that time. I have a whole month off, so I might go abroad.
If anyone here had any experience with that in the past, please PM or post it here, I would really love to hear about this.

 Re: Wwoofing
if you are 100% into it and really really want to do it, they do have worldwide things wwoof(worldwide opportunities on organic farms) so if you are really into this i could maybe get you to talk to my brother about it being that he works on a farm that is in the wwoofing organization

 Re: Wwoofing
That would be cool, I'm not sure yet if I'll use wwoofing for my trip, or simply go backpacking over there and couch surf to sleep around. I'll PM you though if I ever make a decision. Right now, I just want to get some information about this, just learned that this existed (even around my area) yesterday and I'm super excited about this thing. Awesome way to get in touch with different culture and environment.

 Re: Wwoofing
Long complicated story that we will never talk about :D But it does actually seem kinda cool, but what happened to her and other people I know that have done it is you kind of get trapped, and after a few months some places make you leave, so then you have worked your ass off for a couple months just to be able to eat, and now you have to find a way to leave and all that shit, and what happened to my ex was the farm she was working at the dude started to go crazy, it's not cool when your slave owner goes crazy. But I'm sure there are a lot of great stories about it too. I'm just biased.

 Re: Wwoofing
a lot of places you go like around a certain area say you travel thru the entire state of Wisconsin stopping at each one to work for a few months in order to see how things are and then take what you have learned and use it on your own farm/gardens and its like any other internship its not forever you have to just go to learn and then you are on your own to make something of yourself

 Re: Wwoofing
From what I've read tonight on websites and forums, people do encounter stupid people. I'm sure there are a lot of chances that I could live with someone that is not so cool. On another hand, you can also leave anytime you want, and if I go there, don't get me wrong, I'll have enough money on the side. I just think it's a way better way to travel if you want to get in contact with the locals, and work a bit around.
I'm all about outdooring, but if I go somewhere, I'm not just gonna walk around and trying everything I can in 2 weeks. It's gonna get boring, I can tell you. If you couch surf, you meet people, they bring you some places, they show you things and you learn so much more that way. This wwoofing thing seems to be the same, but you still give a hand and help people. The good thing is you can decide who you gonna live with, what it looks like, you can read comments, and you only get to work a couple hours a day during the week, which is awesome! I hate hotels and touristic places. It's so expensive and in the end, you only get to see things that are around these places, things that cost money and don't show you shit about the country. I'll be cool with that only when I'll be older (which is totally ok). It's a totally different way to travel.

 Re: Wwoofing
yeah in most places you only work min of 3 hours a day if you want to work more that is up to you, they are all certified organic farms so everything you are eating is actually food not a piece of shit made to look edible, and you can work for up to a few months in some cases, some places you get paid more then others, they try and pay you some "free time" money in most cases and each place is different in the amount the one my brother works at i think is about 100-200 a month in addition to free housing and food

 Re: Wwoofing
no you literally can work only 3 hours a day if you want to and it is always on organic farms, you do w.e work the farmer would do and it is an internship, but it is a farming internship, today when i was there people were introduced to me as this is our interns blah blah blah and this is our workers blah blah blah and the interns were wwoofers

coffeeeeeeee wrote: btw I speak french LeCoq! I'm french Canadian. The problem is we (or they, w.e.) speak way differently from France folks. We are better at speaking in english, even though we still have an accent, they sound silly. When they said wwoofing, it sounded exactly like a normal person would say Roofing, which got me confused.
