 Today I take the PERT
It's an initial placement exam for college. I start classes for computer science in two days. This means that from now on, I won't be on as much as I normally have been. I don't see this letting up any time soon, either, as it'll be my main priority. I'll let you all know the results of the test as soon as I find out.

GL HF. Make sure to read the directions carefully. They may give you very specific directions as to the grading and that could influence how/if you guess on things that you don't know. On certain tests it's better to leave an answer blank than to try to bullshit it.

Re: Today I take the PERT
Hehe, I think I'll leave them blank instead so I get put I. The appropriate class. The last thing I want to be doing is taking trig when I'm only capable of something lesser. That would equal bad grades, and that's not an option.

Good Luck bro! Relax, I'm sure you'll do fine, you're a bright guy. Just remember that math always works out logically and there is only 1 answer.

Re: Today I take the PERT
So my math is the equivalent of a 9th grader. My english an writin placements were off the charts (positively, that is.) I'm considering either brushing up on math by actually taking these extra classes, finding someone who will teach me a little bit, or just buying a 6$ book to help me. Any suggestions?

In my random opinion, it depends on two things: how much you need to raise your level, and how self-disciplined you are. If you need to raise your level a bunch, you probably need personal instruction regardless (either via classes or a tutor). If you just need a little boost, and you know what points you need to work on, and you have the self-discipline to make yourself stick to a program (I don't), then you could probably be fine using a self-instruction program (book, software, etc). Are you currently going to just get placed in a lower math class in school, or what?

Re: Today I take the PERT
Yeah, so the idea is to place me into a "remedial" class for math which is two tiers lower than my requirement to graduate. Even though those classes will add some personal struggle for myself in terms of having to take on more classes, I feel as if that's just what is necessary for me to comprehend the logic behind math. I don't think that just "brushing up" is going to put me on track, even if I were disciplined enough to do it that way.
I think I may just accept the heavier workload now for a lighter one later, yeah?

Remember, you might have to program that same math down the road. If you can't apply it on paper there's no chance in hell you're going to be able to apply it when you have to program it.

Re: Today I take the PERT
Acid buddy, there is something I want to show you. It's math video training that is better than most actual personal math tutoring that you will find. I speak that as a former math tutor myself. Their videos are free to stream for students. http://videomathtutor.com/BasicMath/Go through the Basic Math videos and then the Algebra videos and if you ever need to take advanced math classes, you will have a very easy time. Make sure to spend your time to go through the videos and do the problems on your own. With Computer Science, right after the standard college level math courses (college algebra & pre calculus), you will have to learn advanced math like Linear Algebra, Basic & Advanced Calculus, Probability & Statistics etc. The site has enough material to give you enough knowledge to tackle any of those courses. What's interesting is that for Undergraduate Computer Science programs, none of the above mentioned math will be useful. All that math is there just to get you the degree. Unless you are going for game programming or business analytics/finance, you will never use any of that math. However, there are a lot of math classes you will have to take and you will need to pay attention to all of them. Otherwise you won't even understand what's going on in the advanced math courses.

I agree on the not skimping part. Leave any kind of "skimping" to the college girl clothing choices. Math is a language with it's own slang at times, but the building blocks are necessary.

http://www.youtube.com/user/numericalmethodsguyOn the topic of online tutors, this guy helped me get a 99% in numerical methods which is a class about programming mathmatics -- usually numerical(approximation) approaches.
