 Dear God...The Power!!!
http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/07/26/amds-10-core-piledriver-chips-revealed/So AMD is planning to release the AMD 10 Core "Piledriver" chips next year which will require a whole new socket in (FM2) which means buying a new mobo...thoughts? Anyone gonna take the plunge? Still waiting to see when Intel comes out with their 12 Core CPU :)

The only things that this would be even remotely worthwhile for are workstations.

I say wait, AMD has yet to release their bulldozer platform which is a response to Intel's Sandy Bridge. Give it some time and see if Bulldozer does better than Sandy Bridge. Then decide!

Nothing is going to take advantage of that many cores. To be honest, for gaming, it's about as useless as tits on a bull. Most games, even when given multi-threading capabilities, only use one core to the max. The workload isn't distributed evenly over all threads.

Parallel programming is quite hard. I'll wait till software developers actually start creating programs which efficiently use 4 cores.

I'm going to assume you've seen Watson. Picky bastard! I should have added that "programs that I run (including games) which efficiently use 4 cores". I get to work with super computers at school, but that doesn't in any way mean a 10 core cpu setup is going to be any use for me at home.

 Re: Dear God...The Power!!!
I was agreeing with you actually. It took a group of super geniuses and programmers years to develop an effective parallel program and system, extending well beyond the average scope of a programmer.
This is just fuel for my "once software catches up with hardware" theory.

This is just fuel for my "once software catches up with hardware" theory. Quite true. It's such a shame :( I should say though, if you're into 3d modeling & animation, you can have a nice one pc monster renderer with a 10 core machine. The top 3d modeling packages always support as many cores as you can use. The time reduction in rendering is unbelievable.
