just stay with xp until windows 7 comes out man. you already know it's just going to be vista but not as s***y.
That's what I am personally doing, though I will be reciving a laptop for graduation so I will end up going with what Coach says and go Ultimate and hope for a upgrade to Winders 7
When it comes to 32 bit vs 64 bit I just worry about program compatibility as I like to sometime experiment with different softwares here and there so I don't know if 64 is for me specifically for that reason.

If you get Vista Ultimate, you'll be able to upgrade to 7 for free. At least that's what a little birdy told me.
Make sure you get something that says that they'll do the upgrade. If you can just wait for W7 if not get the 64-bit vista with upgrade option.

honestly, unless you need 4gb of ram or more, don't bother with 64...

true that! i got 4GB of ram when i built this rig a few months ago and (correct me if I'm wrong) but you can't use the 1066MHZ unless you have a triple core CPU or more. so just wait my man.
64-bit just sounds good. yeah the data rate or whatever is twice as fast but my experiences with 64Bit operating systems isn't one that makes 64bit OS's look good. I'm running vista 32bit, havnt made it to 64bit yet, but 64bit XP caused a few problems for me. I wouldnt bother upgrading unless it was free
