I'm backing up my music CDs using EAC and I'm converting the files to FLAC.

There are different levels of FLAC which determine how compressed the files are going to be. I noticed on piratebay people make reference to level 5 FLAC and level 8 FLAC.

So when I use EAC I don't see levels of FLAC it just gives me a list of different bitrates.

I'm assuming the lower the bitrate the higher the compression.

Am I correct to make that assumption?

There are over 10 bitrates to choose from in EAC and I can't really pinpoint where Level 5 and Level 8 might be. For the first time ever Google and Wikipedia have failed me, the end is near!

FLAC is a lossless format. It shouldn't have a bitrate...

You are correct but you can choose how much you want to compress the file in order to save space.

They apparently refer to this compression through bitrates which I'm assuming works like this:

A file compressed to 320kbps in FLAC is equivalent in size to a 320kbps MP3 file.

FLAC is lossless like you said it just means the file is compressed more.

I have been reading that the more compressed a FLAC file is the more time it takes to decode and play on a portable player. Also, higher compression apparently takes its toll on the battery life too.

I'm using EAC as my converter. It's free and amazing. You can convert to just about any file type available. Also, it has the best error correction software available too.

FLAC is of much better quality than either 320kbps mp3s... the FLAC im listening to right now has a bitrate of 3200kbps. 100MB file for a 4 minute song though.

Yea I got your PM. If thats the case then I think that the bitrate option I see only applies to MP3s conversion so I guess I can ignore it. Thanks for that help file. Th eprogram itself explains just about everything except for that little bit of important info.

I just downloaded it yesterday so I'm still figuring it out. I even checked the box to hide all the advanced stuff until I get a good handle on what this prog can do, this program is awesome.
