I didn't say there was going to necessarily be a "new" and "old" internet, I was just making an example. There will still be "free" parts of the internet. You can't possibly say that they're going to put blocks like porn site security on every single website made. It seems like if they wanted to do something like that they'd have to create a new form of internet anyway.

they don't gain anything even if people click on advertisements. they are still not able to make any profit from it.

also its already been that some sites will have faster access speeds over others. basically, the sites that u have fast access to, are the sites owned by large enough corporations to pay these ISP's. If that happens, like u said they can't put blocks on every website but they can just cap the speeds of all sites and just simply uncap the ones being paid for. if ur concerned about obtaining porn i dont think u need to b afraid, the pornography industry is huge and they will have fast access too.

.

If you don't think that online advertising is a multi-billion dollar industry, you're a F*CKING retard. Even if you don't click on banner ads and whore yourself out to the advertising firms of the internet, they get money every single time you load a page.

How do you think Google makes its money? ONLINE ADVERTISING.

Do they sell any physical products? (Well, they do, but none of you know anything about that -- regardless, it accounts for less than 5% of what they make.)

I'd be willing to say that over 80%, if not 95% of google's income is based on online advertising. They make a KILLING with it. Google is worth 140 billion dollars.

Tell me online advertising isn't a huge industry. You know who the biggest advocate for the internet as it stands is? Google. Know why? It's their bread and butter. Google is all about net neutrality. Know why? Their success depends on it. While I'm not saying that they'd go under if something like this went through, it would certainly hurt them.

i agree with u that google makes a shit load of its income off advertising. but thats because they host advertisements from other people. its the same as in a news paper. i have advertising space, u pay me, i'll put it up. people might see the add, call and inquire (click to see wat its about). but they won't necessarily buy the product.

what you fail to realize is that buying a product has absolutely nothing to do with making money with online advertising.

it's all about loads/clicks.

another thing you don't realize is that your sponsored results on google (that usually come up first) are ads that make google money (directly) when you click on them, 'cause they're putting them on their site.

whether you buy something on the internet or not, every time you load a page with banner ads on it, it makes someones pocketbook a little lighter and someones a little heavier.

actually i do kno about the search results thing. but like u said. someone gets money and someone loses money, at the moment. we, the users, don't lose anything. and thats why advertising on sites doesnt help. they don't gain anything from us.

unfortunately with Virgin Media, they're forcibly taking money from their users through the ISP's for reasons i've already stated.

Well, you're saying web advertising doesn't work, when in fact it does..or else we wouldn't have google!

Silly man.

Your logic doesn't make that much sense. You say you are open minded but your view is pretty close minded.

dude. the person or corporation hosting the ads will get money because the people who have ads are paying them to host it. when we click on the ads. we dont lose anything. it doest really matter what they gain or lose. but its doesnt affect us in any way.

because it doesnt affect us in any way. Virgin Media wants to change that so they can get even more money from larger corporations. The larger companies want their advertisements to reach us. so they pay ISP's like Virgin Media to give them faster accessibility. those little tabs and shit are no longer needed because sites that we can access at high speeds are going to b the actual thing.

instead of paying to get ads hosted, they pay ISP's to driect us (due to speed capping) to their site where they can make more profit off people who subscribe to them because its the only fast option.

Example:

Hi, I am CorpseHumper, the owner and operator of n00bfest.

I want people to associate n00bfest with Counter-Strike and other internet games.

I'll pay to have my ads put on webpages.

Even if people don't click the ad, they will be visually spammed with the n00bfest name and begin to automatically associate it with Counter-Strike and internet gaming. Eventually, when someone mentions Counter-Strike to you, you will think of n00bfest even if you don't want to and even if you've never clicked an ad.

These ads are pretty cheap, since nobody really clicks on them very often and the price I pay per 1,000 page views is less than I pay for a single click.

Now the ISP wants to hijack me. This will hurt my advertising efforts in one of two ways:

I'll be forced to pay more for the advertising. If Virgin gets a piece of the pie, that piece doesn't come from Google's bottom line (or whatever advertising company I use). It gets passed along to the person running the ad. If Virgin cuts in, my costs go up.

I'll have to quit advertising and close my store, because there are too many middle men stepping on the cocaine.

This is multilevel marketing at it's best. There's already a product and a consumer. Now someone wants to step into the middle of the revenue stream and pick up on it because they see an opportunity to make money for nothing.

I guess I should expect a bill from Ford soon. Since I drive my Mustang to go buy things, they'll probably feel entitled to a piece of the action since they're providing the delivery method for the money.

The solution? It's as simple as this:

Dear Virgin,
I bought a vehicle. Your involvement in how or where I drive it is non-existent. If you decide to stop SELLING vehicles and opt to RENT or LEASE them with usage restrictions on them, I'll go buy a different vehicle elsewhere. Someone out there will want to cash-in by selling me what I want.
Love,
America

agreed with corpse.
virgin media needs to F*CK off and other ISP's that directly affect us will get the same treatment if they follow suit.
if we let virgin have their way, the other ISP's will think they can get away with it too.

the whole reason the interweb works is advertising and traffic control retail sales on the internet only account for 30% of interweb money.

This is something I didn't think I ought to make a new thread for, and this thread seemed to best exemplify a home to which this video might belong.

If you want to support Net Neutrality, pay attention to Al Franken and his petitions and such, because he's running a massive campaign for it right now.
