It's up to you, n00bs. You make the choice. If you haven't heard of Natural Selection 2, it's an indie game developed by Unknown Worlds, based on the Steam engine that's been around since 1.6. The sequel to Natural Selection is coming out soon. The game is a mix between RTS and FPS, and is a mix between Starcraft and Counter-Strike. Marines and Aliens go at each other attempting to take over resource towers at given locations on a map. The more resources they gain, the more upgrades they can purchase for the team. Unlike (and cooler) than Starcraft, the commander has a top-down view on his soldiers, but is actually commanding REAL PEOPLE to do objectives. Since I'm testing the alpha/beta, I've gained early access to all the dev tools, dedicated server, etc, and I've got to say that this game is going to be a BIG HIT. I feel n00bfest would be alot better if it expanded to more games. Cuz after all this is the worlds largest gaming community thats actually fun

F*CK yeah. I like the first Natural Selection, if it is better than the original then it will be sweet.

Why try to force expansion into other games?

We don't need to hold a vote to see who wants to expand. If we want to expand it will happen, if we aren't ready yet then it wont. We've already expanded into plenty of games without holding a vote for them, why start now?

I can look on my friend's list at any given point and see n00b members playing on TF2, BF:BC2, MW2, CS:S, Alien Swarm etc etc.

Personally, I think having a central game that everyone in the community has played or still plays gives this place an incredibly homely feeling. I have been a part of several other large gaming communities that have had multiple games under the hood, and you know what that lead to? Political problems. Factions of different users feeling they got shafted or left out of community fun. It leads to segmented cliques instead of a big family.

So while a few members of n00b move outside CS here and there, the community as a whole is and probably will always remain a CS community. Trying to fracture that is trying to fracture the community, and I think it is a terrible idea to even consider.

I understand your point, but I have to disagree. I don't think this is a move to try and replace CS:S with NS2 or anything. This community will probably always be a CS:S community at heart. Plus, I don't see how you think we're trying to force an expansion. That's why acid is taking a vote, to see if expanding to NS2 is actually warranted. If there isn't enough interest, then I can't see them going through with it.



But that's not necessarily expanding. The idea is to get an official n00b server/community going so that we can recruit from more than one game. We did something similar with COD4 and it worked nicely while we had the server. Granted, most of the n00bs from COD4 that weren't n00bs that originally played CS:S left (with the exception of Double and Dieus) after Gameservers started F*CKING with things, but I think if the server would have been around longer the COD4 part of the community may have been a bigger part of n00bfest, to the point where they may not have left the website immediately after the server went away.


I understand that concern and there is a possibility that that could happen. There's also the possibility that that won't happen. Some of the people who play NS2 may also play CS:S. They may see we're a badass community and want to start playing on the n00b servers when they play CS:S as well. Personally, I don't think we'll know unless we try.

I have to agree with Hooker on this one. For me, n00bfest is and probably always will be a place that I come to hang out with some cool people and play CS. I don't play any other games right now and with my studies becoming more and more demanding, I doubt I will have time to play a new game.

Although I'm not against the idea, I think it would be a shame if we had less and less CS players because everyone started to play Natural Selection or any other game for that matter. I'll always love n00bfest no matter what happens but I won't be jumping on the NS2 bandwagon.

I'm with Montreal and Hooker as well. CS is our game, individuals or groups going out and trying new things as good but as a whole this is a CS community in some of the sense and always will be. I posted more opinions under your poll as well.

I'm on the fence here. On one hand I think expansion into other games would be fun. On the other hand, I've seen communities divide and die because they added a second game. I'm not saying that would happen here, just worries me.

Let me straighten things out for you guys a little bit.
n00bfest has always been a CS gaming community. The fact that people have ALREADY quit CS (including myself and MANY others due to the update which they just hate) doesn't help. For people who decide to play other games already like Alien Swarm, etc... this is NOT expansion, that's called ADD. n00bfest will NOT die because of an expansion. The same attitude, and atmosphere will be applied to ALL of our servers and their environments. What we're doing here is giving those people a chance to get away from "just counter-strike all the time" who simply aren't involved in CS anymore, but want to continue being a part of n00bfest. We are n00bfest, we've been around for years and years, we're not going anywhere regardless of an expansion or not. We are not taking the entire community and shoving them into NS2. The point of this poll is to figure out how many people support the game itself, and would like to join in the server from time to time and play. The community for NS2 will be so big, that it will fill our NS2 server to the brim, and with people with the same n00bfest attitude. There will be no division of the community. Everything will still run the same way it does now with our CS section. There will just be a big part of n00bfest playing NS2 or other games we can expand to at the same time. Like I said, some people are just done with CS, period. They shouldn't need to feel like they HAVE to come back to CS just to be in the n00bfest environment. I don't believe that this is an attempt to fracture anything regarding the community to be honest. Expansion, in our eyes, just means giving it a dedicated server, not forcing half the n00bs to quit CS, and go play NS2-- taking away from the community.

I'm always willing to try out a new game.

NS2 actually looks really good. I'd love to try it out... especially before I buy it.

It's hard to say what to compare it to, it's really in a league of its own.
The best comparison I can give you is that it's like playing Starcraft if you're the commander, it's a really scary-ass game. I would highly recommend watching some of the Youtube videos from the links I posted in the announcement section to really get a grasp on what it's like. You'll probably find more in-depth videos if you search for NS 1 videos instead of the second one since NS2 is still in development.

for those who have not played ns1 adn have no idea what its like.. Ill try to explain it... actuallly acid did a good job saying its like CS crossed with SC... however to me (and for token) itsl ike a cross of BF2 if you played it.

when you start as humans one guy gets into the "commander" seat. he controls construction of specific buildings/armories to upgrade weapons supply ammo etc. The rest of the human team goes to war with the alieans, helps build expansion buildings and does what the commander requests.. you can kick your commander out if need be in case he's an idiot.

upgrades can be made to each individual person when they meet the requirements, usually XP

on the alien side, same thing happens pretty much, EXCEPt you dont' have weapons, you pretty much eat and maul people to death... as you get the required experience and as your "hive" expands you mutate into upgrades. for those who played SC you pretty much start as the zerg drone and mutate your way up to the mammoth unit with teh big tusks

I see NS1 is a mod of half life??? If so is it still possible to play it?

like hooker said we dont really need to try to go into NS, it just happens. and im sure everyone is always willing to play something new. (not all the time if its cruddy, you know what i mean.) I think we should actually play the game and then see where we go from there.

I'm against this one... I mean, it's just like Hooker and t0ken said, if we need to expand, it will happen naturally, but forcing into another game is not a good idea, since we might end up with divisions.
