cl_updaterate is good when dealing with choke issues. A high updaterate gives more choke, which is bad... On n00bfest servers I have to play at cl_updaterate 40 because the lag is bad. But on other servers and scrim servers, I can crank it up to 100 with 0 choke.
cl_cmdrate also affects lag issues. default is 30, but I keep mine around 80
btw: I think Cal reps recommend setting both cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate at 101, but only do this if your comp is Uber. Mine is decent, but my fps doesnt matter because I have an LCD monitor... 60fps max :x

So can anyone explain exactly where my newb self needs to put the commands... and I use CZ... not source... And what commands will get me above 70 fps and stop dropping into the 50's when a buncha action goes on?

the whole second half of that question made absolutely NO SENSE AT ALL. check what you type always. and if you notice it afer you post it, you can always edit it.

Rates should only affect your ping.. which has to do with your internet.. not your uber leet computer.
First off, turn off vertical sync.
Go to your desktop and right click --> Properties. From there, select the settings tab and towards the bottom right click advanced. Scroll over to your graphics card tab and browse around till you find vertical sync.. and turn it off. This will uncap your FPS from 60 to 100.

Now.. Counter-Strike caps your FPS at 100.. no matter what your fps_max is.. unless its < 100. To uncap your FPS from 100 (not recommended) use the command developer 1, not developer 13. This will uncap your FPS from 100 and the higher FPS is based on your fps_max.. and your computer.
(That thumbnail has got to be the biggest pain in the ass I've ever been through..)

Gman could probably get a steady 150+ fps with his leet computer.

lol @ year old posts
but srsly
Like Tucker's post says, I using the developer settings is not recommended. You might get better gameplay, but it makes other parts of CS blow, such as simply reading messages.
I have an LCD monitor, so I only get 60fps even with Vsync off, but it's fine for me. I play 1.6 much more than CZ, but I play more competitively, and 60fps works. If you truly want better fps, just find some commands via google (keywords: cs config fps video settings graphics card fps).
CZ isn't a hardcore game, so just buy a better computer, lawl

I used a LCD monitor from Christmas last year up until two weeks ago when it died. I've had 100 fps since I learned about vsync when I started playing CS. All vsync does is lock your fps to your monitor's resfresh rate.
You either still have fps_max 60 on or something else random like that. It's weird that you're stuck at 60 fps.
For JinCrypt - that's what develop is.
It's better to turn it off. You run slower and you can get stuck on walls by merely touching them. It's not worth the imaginary 10-20 fps it says you get.

I doubt it. Most shitty integrated gfx cards don't have the option.
