Ok so the other day im playing on the server, terrorizing the locals with my favorite weapon the shotty ofcourse. When out of the blue, crayola is like hey Mithril, can you teach me how to use a shotgun? Im like teach you? hes like yea, could you post a thread on the forums giving some tips on the shotty? im like sure....so here you are....

First things first the basic shotgun......

8 shells of death
the average body shot from moderate distance: 56 points of damage
Moderate distance being about from one end of ice world to the other max
Within about 20 feet i would guess the shotgon is one shot kill with a high chest /neck area shot scoring around 120 points of damage IF its a solid it.
a Head shot is lethal at moderate damage, but your more than likely gonna score high 80's.
almost any normal body shot/head/neck/chest is almost 100% garenteed lethal at point blank range IF its a solid hit, of course there are variables to this as tboner and HHB also know the infamous 99 points of damage when we get owned shortly after and they should have been a pile of hamburger

Benifits of using the shotgun.....

You can end a pissing contest really fast.
Great team support weapon IF your point man or second man.
On a hostage map like militia or office or any other map where the opposing team is forced to engage you at close range the shotty can give your team a serious advantage.
Firing down a hallway like when your coming up the back of office your going to hit everything thats coming up it.
As soon as you load one shell you can immediatly fire it, unlike having to load a whole clip again, that has saved my ass more times than i can count.

Drawbacks of the shotty......

You only have 8 shots...
DISTANCE CAN BE YOUR ENEMY!!!!
If your in the back of your team and the entire opposing team turns the corner, your helpless unless you want to try to shoot through your teammates to kill them....Ive been yelled at more than anyone else for that when i was first learning. in the words of bonsai, "Mithril you need to calm down with that shotty man your killing us."
The fire rate can be a little slow. specially if your gettin rushed.
Taking on more than one enemy at a time, requires allot of time, blood,skill, and even more prayer to get right. The best i have ever done in a forward confrontation with a shotgun is 3 people and no bullshit about it that was luck.

OK, now on to general strategy......

Noob learning.....

Your new role is to run second man for your team.
Follow the first person around everywhere he goes, your job is to cover his ass and stop anyone that gets infront of him. IF that means he has to stop and crouch and fire at an enemy thats around the corner, you go out there and get his ass so your team can move on. There is no such thing as being a chicken shit with a shotty in your hands. Your all going to die is just a matter of when.
Always follow to the side and behind of him. never directly behind for obvious reasons. My suggestion is this, follow an experianced player and preferably someone who wont bitch too much about you stealing kills.
There are 2 reasons for this.
1: The experianced player knows where to go on the map and how to move and where the enemy is going to most likely be.
2: Following him means an enemy is more likely to shoot him than you, giving you time to work on your aim and team strategy because you dont have to worry about immediatly getting shot.
Your going to do this till you can knock down anything that gets in his way %50 of the time or more, without him either killing them, or him getting killed or you both getting killed.
If the guy you choose to follow is especially good on any giving map, you may never have time to shoot, but your there as backup if any enemy comes from behind or the side.
Small example of other things to do. lets say your on T, playing dust 2.
Your following your teammate of choice, and you guys make it through short A. You look across the map and low and behold there is a CT on the other side on the ramp near the bomb site. He seems your teammate and they both start exchanging fire. The CT is moving behind those big boxes at the bombsite to give himself cover. Your job is to go get him. Dont wait, dont think about how many other CT's could possibly be behind those boxes. Just go get him.

Running pointman......

This should eventually be your job. You are the most deadly person on your team for close range engagements. You ofcourse should be the first one through the door. You are the all powerful meat shield. You take all the bullets for your team so they can move through and complete there objective. Take as many with you as you can. Things you need to know and remember.....
DONT BLOCK YOUR TEAM!!!! you have to keep moving. none of this stop to shoot shit. if you see a bad evil enemy charge him and keep shooting. your team will know that your in the middle of a firefight and because you didnt stop they will be able to help you.
Keep in mind there are people behind you. Run down the side of the hallway or whatever to give your team a clear line of sight on an enemy. you never know they might pick off one or 2 so you dont get splattered when you get to the end. If you decided you have to fire move back and forth across the hallway or whatever (dont stop moving forward) so that still gives them time to shoot. You might even save a teamate by taking a couple bullets for him. Not to mention youll be closer to your enemy....right where you need to be.
If you guys are using mics and your just that far ahead of your team. call out how many enemies you see, or call out all clear. If you flash call it!!!

Distance troubles....

Your on T, dust2, you run through long A you turn the corner before the final stretch and at the other end of the map next to the bombsite there is a CT with an M-4. Your shotgun will not help you at this range. So what do you do?? If your feeling balsy and especially froggy this day. GO GET THAT BASTARD!! WHO THE HELL CARES IF THERES 100 YARDS BETWEEN YOU AND HIM THAT BITCH IS GOING DOWN!!!!! You dont even think twice about it. You charge at him. Pull out your best pistol, and run and gun. ducking, weaving, tellin him that his mama is like bungie jumping 50 bucks for 30 secs and if the rubber breaks yo ass is dead!! Keep shooting, I prefer the dualies for this, cause you have 30 shots to go through and you might even hit him a couple times making him decide to retreat and move away, giving you time to get closer. and dont jump at that distance, it just slows you down. also a newbie player if he cant hit you while your trying your best evasive manuvers is more likly to spray and pray. Probably missing you. Causing him to have to reload. giving you time to get even closer. Once you get close enough that you think you can deliver maximum damage with the shotty switch weapons and put one in his head.
Things to remember. 2 cts at that distance are bad news. call your buddies. wait till they knocked one down. then charge.

All you need to know about aiming...

Shotguns have a spread, aim high on the chest or neck. thats all you really need to know. The rest is all practice.

Taking on multiple enemies in reasonably close quarters....

This is allot of practice and allot of gettin yourself killed. Basically there are usually 2 times when you will encounter this issue. first is when your running point. second is when the rest of your team is dead and the other team is moving in packs of 2 or 3 or worse. Best thing i can tell you is this. If at all possible try to move to get yourself infont of one enemy and blocking the rest of thier line of sight. Forcing them to shoot through there buddy or move around him to see you. that is the best chance you have.
use anything that is around you. boxes walls anything. but try to only let one of them have a clean shot at you at a time. if you have to fire and retreat around a corner to get a better position then thats what you do.
once youve really gotten the hang of the shotty, then consider if you think you can handle charging a group of 2. i have done this many times and succeded, but allot of that is the luck of the draw. Remember that your shotty has a spead to it too. at moderate distance you can aim between them if they are closly moving together and hit them both at the same time till you can get closer for max damage then single them out.

this is what works for me, my strategy could be flawed. prolly could have allot of errors but this is what works for me. so you asked crayola so there it is take it or leave it. Im sure than any of the other experianced shotty users could prolly give some helpful insight as well. good luck bro
