So I have guns, lots of guns, but none that I would consider a "Long Range" rifle.

A buddy of mine asked me to go hunting at the end of November in Kansas which got me thinking about what I would take to shoot(deer). The only Rifle I think might do the trick would be my Norinco SKS(hold your laughter). I know its only good out to 100yds or so, so I started looking into what else I could buy on a budget and the Mosins came up.

SO, whos got one? I was thinking about finding a 91/30 in 7.62x54R. Word on the street is you can find them for under $120. The only problem ive heard of is its a pain to get a scope mounted on them.

Any advice? oh, and keep the suggestions under $300. this is my first time hunting so I dont need to spend a shit load on something i only use once

A SKS is good for out past 100 yards, don't doubt it.

Mounting a scope on a Mosin is gay and even gayer because it has to be mounted in front of the action, so you can't put your eye close enough to see through it properly, so you might as well forget it. Look at youtube vids.

It's deer season, or close to it, so all deer guns are on sale. When I was 15, my first deer gun was a Marlin 30-30 Lever gun, came with a scope, also not expensive. That might be near your price range.

Look in the Sunday paper ads at sporting goods stores, Gander, Fleet Farm, etc. there should be hella guns and ammo on sale this time of year. Find a cheap deer gun you like and can afford, I guess. It's hard to F*CK up buying a deer rifle. Many come with scopes attached. They might not be the best, but for your price range, they will be decent enough.

I have an EOTech 552 on my AR-15, a $400+ optic, which is more than you would spend on the whole gun, optics get crazy expensive.

I will be using my AR-15 with EOtech 552, with 6x magnifier. AR-15s are just as accurate as bolt guns, (except for ultra high-end military bolt-action sniper rifles that cost $10,000+) so there's no reason why I need to use a .30-06 bolt-action rifle that's more difficult to shoot, when I can use my AR-15 which is much easier to shoot and just as accurate at 0-500 yards as a bolt-action rifle since an AR-15 meant to be an accurate, long-range military weapon.

A Mosin would make a fine deer rifle, it's a long range gun no doubt, but I don't see you hitting anything with it past 100 yards unless you practice. No offense. Iron sights are fine for long range, soldiers used them in WWI and WWII everyday, but they were trained, you are not. If you see a deer at 100+ yards and you got a Mosin, you'll miss, unless you've practiced, shooting is just like anything else.

SKS is awesome, I've got one, had it for years, easy to maintain, fun to shoot.

Mosin's are a gamble. You may or may not get a one that shoots good. But if you do get one that shoots good, they're decent rifles.

I personally do not like the bolts on them. Too janky.

Marlin 30-30 or look into a used Remington 700

From what ive read it is a roll of the dice to get a good one, but since they are sooooooo cheap compared to other rifles it might be worth it

I have one have yet to shoot it though, picked up for $125 I think. If you get the bayonet be careful not to put a hole in your roof

I have one, got it for around $100.00. It is kinda hit and miss on whether or not it shoots well. Mine, however, is dead on. You really don't need a scope on it though, just use the adjustable sight that it already has. Works for me.

Use your SKS for deer hunting unless you REALLY think you're going to be shooting out past 100yds. If so, then you're probably going to need something that costs more than $300 to ethically hunt past 100yds. I'd look at sporterized Springfield M1903's to start -- but most of them are going to be in the $400 range.

I've heard of a few guys using Mosins to deer hunt with. My uncle uses an SVT40 which is the same caliber as the Mosin just semi auto. I also know guys who use their SKS in the woods for deer.

I'd spend the money and buy something used with a scope already mounted, likely used but plenty of life left. Once you get the Mosin and get it tapped and buy a scope you will be in it for the same price as buying a nice lever action.

they make a cantilever scope mount but the bolt must be modified also plus a scope by the time time u pay some one to do that. you could spend just a little more and get a decent used bolt action in a more common round because rember the 7.62x54 ammo is hard to find and expensive unless u use the old corrosive surplus shit witch is bad for the gun and not very acurate heres one http://www.basspro.com/Remington-243-Wh ... 8709/.also there are 1 shot h&r riffles for less then 300 they are acurrate but slow to reload
