 Have a question.....
I am currently thinking about using a kill-disk on my computer to "start fresh" since my computer is not working as well as i would like it to be. Is it worth it? And if i do wipe it, what OS should i get?

DON'T go to your local university and look for the Win7 key on all their XP machine towers.

 Re: Have a question.....
I'm not telling you that it's okay. However, once you legally gain access to a software license key, you can download a legit version of whatever OS. How you go about using it is your business. Legal, Direct links to Microsoft's official digital downloads of Windows 7: http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-7-iso-x86-and-x64-official-direct-download-links-ultimate-professional-and-home-premium/Just an FYI in case it applies to you, some universities provide a software repository for access by students and often that repository includes a Microsoft OS.

 Re: Have a question.....
DBAN is overkill if you plan on keeping the hardware. A quick format should be enough for re-installing an OS

 Re: Have a question.....
Microsoft gives away free software to students. I know up here in Canada my friends attending Waterloo could get Win 7, Office Student Version and a few others for free. She wasn't using her Win 7 Pro from Microsoft and gave it to me.

A quick format should be enough for re-installing an OS I once had a hard drive that took a massive shit and after attempting to format several times unsuccessfully I ran DBAN and all of a sudden the bad sectors and whatever that were preventing the formats from completing appropriately were gone and the drive behaved as if it was brand new.

 Re: Have a question.....
Ya but if hes just trying to reformat DBAN is way over kill unless hes having a problem like yours also you might look into upgrading your mobo and getting some better ram that could be alot of your problem of if its a old hd i'd look into getting a new one no less than 7200 rpm sata

 Re: Have a question.....
Just so you guys know for future reference, there's a thing formerly called MSDNAA (MICROSOFT DEVELOPER NETWORK ACADEMIC ALLIANCE), but now goes by Microsoft DreamSpark. Basically, if you're a student and your university/college is in on this, you can get copies of Windows through there with keys. XP, Vista, Win7, and other software from Microsoft is available with that. Can get both 32 and 64 bit versions depending on what you're looking at. This is probably what Cpt Reynolds was talking about, but I thought I'd clarify. Also make sure to look out for student discounts on software.

ALSO, DBAN IS FREE, F*CK! Yeah, this is the program that my University goes with. You can go to the Microsoft website for the MSDNAA (I guess now DreamSpark) and it'll tell you if your school is a participant, and if so, which software/OSes you have available to you. Also, who said DBAN wasn't free?
