Post The new Rock Band and Guitar Hero
So I'm sure you all have heard a good bit about the new versions of these games, and at least heard of the fact that they will all be using a real 6- stringed, 25- fret MIDI guitar instead of a 5- button controller. I just wanted to get you guy's opinions about this new idea. Personally, I think its awesome, and I also think we can expect to see a whole new generation of kids picking up guitar as a serious hobby now thanks to the games. There are drawbacks, however. The game's learning curve will be insane now. If any of you are guitarists, then you should know how to read tablature. Now imagine reading those tabs in real-time to a song and trying to play up-to-speed. When it comes to sight reading tablature in-time, its difficult for me, and I've been playing for a decade (though it is a great exercise. Guitar Pro or Tabit, anyone? lol). This means that players of the game will almost certainly have to know the song by heart and practice the song (as you would have to with a real guitar) before being able to do well. Of course, there are difficulty levels to balance the learning curve out, but the fact remains.

Another drawback will be the price of the game. I would expect the guitar alone to be at the very least $150, and another $50 or $60 for the software.

I, myself, am stoked for the game... and I can't wait to see how well the experienced guitarists do when the game comes out.

Ill have to find the Guitar Hero youtube video later on when I have time. Class in 15 mins, lol.

Yeah, the two major players in the music game scene switched over after these guys http://www.powergig.com/ but obviously are going to have more people buy their games. I think it's a nice change. One of the excuses I always had as to why I never played Guitar Hero beyond the Medium level, was that it felt pointless to learn how to play those songs when all I was doing was pushing buttons on the fretboard. Now I'd have no excuse.

Yeah, I had heard and read about the powergig game, but when I looked at the song list for it I was immediately turned off. I guess it takes alot of money and influence to garner the support of the big-name artists. I think its a good move to make the games so in-depth and real... learning guitar and music is now fun (at least more fun than it was).

The only reason they are doing this is because more and more artists are saying F*CK GH/RB because they think kids are picking up the plastic controller simulating their songs instead of picking up a real guitar. Goes both ways I guess. How many kids thought oh wow this is cool, I want to try guitar because of this game? I don't think I picked up a guitar longer than 10 minutes before GH3 came out. Still haven't learned how to play, but I took interest in a wider range of songs and music after the game. If the price of the guitar + game isn't more than the system it comes out on, I might look into getting it.

I think you can still use the older guitars for the newer versions, so if people really don't want to use the real guitar, they don't have to. I used to love the guitar hero and rock band games, but when they started making so many of them I couldn't keep track and lost interest. I prolly won't pick this one up either, but it definitely looks cool.
